Abstract
The present invention provides a method for lowering blood glucose levels in an animal by transplanting a population of pancreatic endocrine precursor cells into an animal.
Claims21
A method for lowering blood glucose levels in a mammal comprising:
- (a) differentiating pancreatic endoderm cells in a medium comprising an exogenous retinoid to obtain a population of pancreatic endocrine precursor cells expressing insulin, NKX6.1 and PDX1, but not expressing CDX2;
- and
- (b) transplanting the population of pancreatic endocrine precursor cells of step (a) into the liver, natural pancreas, renal subcapsular space, omentum, peritoneum, subserosal space, intestine, or a subcutaneous pocket of the mammal, wherein the pancreatic endocrine precursor cells express insulin, lower the blood glucose levels in the mammal, and are protected from host immune response when transplanted.
