Abstract
An eNodeB uses a first portion of a frequency spectrum as a primary cell and uses a second portion of the frequency spectrum as a secondary cell that is dynamically shared with a 5G base station. The eNodeB and the 5G base station communicate to dynamically share the second portion of the frequency spectrum.
Claims20
A method for a first radio access technology to dynamically share spectrum with a second radio access technology comprising:
- a first base station utilizing a first portion of the spectrum as a first radio access technology primary cell during a first time period to communicate with first user equipment in a first area, the first base station using the first radio access technology;
- the first base station utilizing a second portion of the spectrum as a secondary cell during the first time period, the secondary cell being aggregated with the first portion of the spectrum to communicate in the first area;
- a second base station utilizing at least some of the second portion of the spectrum during a second time period to communicate with second user equipment in the first area, the second base station using the second radio access technology;
- the first base station utilizing the first portion of the spectrum as the first radio access technology primary cell during the second time period;
- the second base station using a third portion of the spectrum as a second radio access technology primary cell, wherein the third portion includes a fourth portion of the spectrum used as a control plane by the second base station;
- the second base station turning off subcarriers in a fifth portion of the spectrum, the fifth portion being part of second radio access technology primary cell;
- aggregating the fifth portion of the spectrum for use with the first portion of the spectrum by the first base station during the first time period;
- the second base station turning on the subcarriers in the fifth portion of the spectrum that had been turned off and using the fifth portion to communicate with the second user equipment during the second time period;
- and
- the second user equipment determining that the second portion of the spectrum is unavailable based on a detected absence of one or more pilot tones in the second portion of the spectrum.

A system comprising:
- a first base station utilizing a first radio access technology to communicate in a first area with first user equipment and using a first portion of a frequency spectrum as a first radio access technology primary cell and using a second portion of the frequency spectrum as a secondary cell aggregated with the first radio access technology primary cell during a first time period;
- a second base station utilizing second radio access technology to communicate in the first area, the second base station utilizing the second portion of the frequency spectrum during a second time period to communicate with second user equipment;
- and
- wherein the first base station is communicatively coupled to the second base station to synchronize dynamic sharing of the second portion of the frequency spectrum during the first and second time periods;
- wherein the second base station uses a third portion of the frequency spectrum as a second radio access technology primary cell, wherein the third portion includes a fourth portion of the frequency spectrum used as a control plane by the second base station;
- wherein the second base station turns off subcarriers in a fifth portion of the frequency spectrum, the fifth portion being in the third portion of the frequency spectrum;
- wherein the first base station utilizes the fifth portion of the frequency spectrum aggregated with the first radio access technology primary cell to communicate with the first user equipment during the first time period;
- wherein the second base station turns on the subcarriers in the fifth portion of the frequency spectrum that had been turned off and uses the fifth portion of the frequency spectrum to communicate with the second user equipment during the second time period;
- wherein the second user equipment performs measurement procedures on the fifth portion of the frequency spectrum responsive to pilot signals being detected;
- and
- wherein the second user equipment does not perform measurement procedures on the fifth portion of the frequency spectrum responsive to an absence of pilot signals detected by the second user equipment subsequent to the pilot signals being detected at an earlier time.
