Abstract
A safety system for powered cutting tools includes a miter saw safety device. Embodiments of the miter saw safety device may be positioned on one or both sides of the rotating saw blade and include a pivotable support arm and a support plate that is repositionable relative to the support arm. In some embodiments the support plate is biased toward the guide fence of the miter saw. The device enhances the capabilities of miter saw to make precise cuts safer, faster and easier.
Claims27
In combination:
- a miter saw having a base, a guide fence, a rotatable work piece supporting surface with an associated movable saw blade assembly, and a positioning arm, the saw blade assembly having a saw blade;
- a first safety device comprising:
- a first base plate removably mounted to the positioning arm of the miter saw on a first side of the saw blade;
- a first support arm pivotally mounted to the first base plate, the first support arm having a first portion directly connected to and extending vertically from the base plate and a second portion extending horizontally from the first portion, the second portion having a distal end positioned closer to the guide fence than the first portion and the second portion movable in a first plane above and parallel to the work piece supporting surface;
- a first safety plate having a first end and a second end, the first safety plate connected and repositionable relative to the first support arm with the first end positioned distally beyond the distal end of the second portion of the first support arm.

In combination:
- a miter saw having a base, a guide fence, a rotatable work piece supporting surface with an associated positioning arm, and a movable saw blade assembly;
- a first safety device mounted to the positioning arm of the miter saw on a first side of the saw blade assembly, the first safety device having a first support arm that pivots in a first plane above and parallel to the work piece supporting surface, the first support arm having a first end and a second end and wherein the first end of the first support arm is oriented closer to the guide fence than the second end of the first support arm, the first safety device having a first safety plate having a first end and a second end, the first safety plate movably connected to the first support arm with the first end of the first safety plate positioned distally beyond the first end of the first support arm, and the first safety device having a first biasing member to bias the first end of the first safety plate distally away from the first end of the first support arm.
