Diversity based relay for wireless communications between a head-mounted display and a console

A head-mounted display, comprising:

• an antenna array;
• a radio frequency integrated circuit configured to:
• receive a first set of data packets from a console, the head-mounted display in direct communication with the console,
• detect a degradation in quality of wireless communication between a console and a head-mounted display,
• identify a relay with which the head-mounted display can wirelessly communicate, the relay configured to wirelessly communicate with the head-mounted display via the antenna array using a first communication channel and configured to wirelessly communicate with the console using a second communication channel that is isolated from the first communication channel;
• initiate wireless communication between the head-mounted display and the relay using the first communication channel;
• and
• receive a second set of data packets from the relay via the first wireless communication channel, the second set of data packets received at the relay from the console using the second communication channel, wherein the console is in direct communication with the relay via the second communication channel.

A relay, comprising:

• a first antenna array facing a console;
• a second antenna array facing an anticipated position of a head-mounted display;
• and
• a radio-frequency (RF) circuit that is configured to:
• form a first communication channel with the console and a second communication channel with the head-mounted display, the first communication channel being isolated from the second communication channel, the RF circuit in direct communication with the console via the first communication channel, and the RF circuit in direct communication with the head-mounted display via the second communication channel,
• receive data packets from the console using the first communication channel, and
• forward the received data packets to the head-mounted display using the second communication channel.
