Abstract
Described herein are methods for the bromine-facilitated synthesis of fluoro-sulfur compounds, that include SF4, SF5Cl, SF5Br and SF6. The methods described herein generally require lower temperature and pressure, produce higher yields, require less time, do not use corrosive or costly reactants and solvents that are commonly used in the synthesis of the fluoro-sulfur compounds, and do not produce deleterious waste products when compared to previously-used methods.
Claims27
A method comprising:
- admixing a Br2 reactant, an SF4 reactant, and a metal fluoride reactant selected from the group consisting of AgF2, AgF, or a combination thereof, thereby initiating a reaction to produce an amount of SF5Br, and wherein the reaction takes place at temperatures from about −10° C. to a decomposition temperature of SF5Br and the reaction occurs without adding reactants chosen from S2F10, BrF, BrF3, BrF5, CsBrF4, CsBrF2, or combinations thereof.
A method comprising:
- admixing a Br2 reactant, an SF4 reactant, and a metal fluoride reactant selected from AgF, AgF2, or combinations thereof, to initiate a reaction in which the Br2 reactant, the SF4 reactant, and the metal fluoride reactant react to produce an amount of SF5Br and an amount of AgBr, wherein the reaction takes place at temperatures from about −10° C. to a decomposition temperature of SF5Br.
