Abstract
A medical device uses UWB units to infer a position of an adjunct positioned in proximity to an exterior portion of a patient's body. The position information can be used to provide CPR feedback to a rescuer. In other applications, the position information can be used to provide prompts to a user to change the position of the adjunct.
Claims20
A medical device comprising:
- at least one reflective adjunct configured to be positioned at a first location, the first location proximal and external to a first portion of a patient's body;
- at least one ultra-wide band (UWB) unit configured to be positioned at a second location, the second location separate from the first location and proximal and external to a second portion of the patient's body, the at least one UWB unit including a transmitter configured to selectively transmit at least a UWB signal through the patient's body toward the at least one reflective adjunct and a receiver configured to receive at least a reflected UWB signal reflected from the at least one reflective adjunct, the at least one UWB unit providing one or more indications of an amount of time elapsed between transmission of the UWB signal and reception of the reflected UWB signal;
- a processor configured to receive the one or more indications and determine a position of the reflective adjunct relative to the at least one UWB unit, and
- an output unit configured to communicate the position of the at least one reflective adjunct at any moment in time during administration of one or more compressions as part of a delivery of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

A system, comprising:
- an adjunct;
- an ultra-wide band (UWB) unit, including:
- a transmitter configured to emit a UWB signal, the UWB signal transmitted through the patient towards the adjunct;
- a receiver configured to receive a reflected UWB signal reflected from the adjunct;
- a processor configured to:
- determine an elapsed time from the emission of the UWB signal and the reception of the reflected UWB signal,
- determine a position of the adjunct relative to the UWB unit based at least in part on the elapsed time, and
- generate an output that includes the position of the adjunct relative to the UWB unit during an administered chest compression.
