Determining a location of a disconnected device

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:

• instruct a particular access point (AP) of a group of APs to send a distance-probing packet before sending a probe response packet to a disconnected device after receiving a probe request packet from the disconnected device;
• receive a media access control (MAC) address of the disconnected device from the probe request packet;
• select a sub-group of APs of the group of APs having received signal strength indicators (RSSI) that indicates a satisfactory wireless connection with the disconnected device;
• instruct the sub-group of APs to send distance-probing packets to the MAC address of the disconnected device;
• and
• determine a location of the disconnected device based on time-of-flight (ToF) measurements of each AP of the sub-group of APs;
• wherein:
• the processor is part of a location determination system;
• and
• the disconnected device is a device that is unknown to the location determination system.

A method, comprising, by a processor:

• instructing a particular access point (AP) of a group of APs to send a distance-probing packet before sending a probe response packet to a disconnected device after receiving a probe request packet from the disconnected device;
• receiving:
• a media access control (MAC) address of the disconnected device from the probe request packet;
• and
• a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) from the particular AP;
• determining an area based on the RSSI;
• selecting a sub-group of APs of the group of APs based on the location coordinates of the sub-group of APs being within the determined area;
• instructing the sub-group of APs to send distance-probing packets to the MAC address of the disconnected device;
• and
• determining a location of the disconnected device based on time-of-flight (ToF) measurements of each AP of the sub-group of APs;
• wherein:
• the processor is part of a location determination system;
• and
• the disconnected device is a device that is unknown to the location determination system.
