Abstract
A device searches for a primary access network, and acquires the primary access network. The device also requests a service provided by a network connected to the primary access network, and attaches to the primary access network only when the service is requested by the device.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- forming, by a device, an association between the device and a primary access network;
- requesting, by the device, a service provided by a network connected to the primary access network;
- determining, by the device, whether to attach to the primary access network or to an alternate access network based on a carrier-to-interference ratio associated with the primary access network;
- selectively attaching, by the device, to the primary access network or to the alternate access network based on the carrier-to-interference ratio satisfying a first threshold carrier-to-interference ratio;
- determining, by the device and based on attaching to the primary access network when the carrier-to-interference ratio satisfies the first threshold carrier-to-interference ratio, that the device is in an active operational mode on the primary access network;
- determining, by the device and based on determining that the device is in the active operational mode on the primary access network, whether the carrier-to-interference ratio satisfies a second threshold carrier-to-interference ratio;
- determining, by the device and based on the carrier-to-interference ratio being below the second threshold carrier-to-interference ratio, whether the carrier-to-interference ratio is below the second threshold carrier-to-interference ratio for a threshold period of time;
- acquiring, by the device, the alternate access network based on determining that the carrier-to-interference ratio is below the second threshold carrier-to-interference ratio for the threshold period of time;
- returning, by the device and based on acquiring the alternate access network, to the primary access network;
- determining, by the device and based on returning to the primary access network, whether the carrier-to-interference ratio satisfies the first threshold carrier-to-interference ratio;
- and
- performing, by the device, a handover to the alternate access network based on the carrier-to-interference ratio being below the first threshold carrier-to-interference ratio.

- selectively attach to the primary access network or to the alternate access network based on the carrier-to-interference ratio satisfying a first threshold carrier-to-interference ratio;
- determine, based on attaching to the primary access network when the carrier-to-interference ratio satisfies the first threshold carrier-to-interference ratio, that the device is in an active operational mode on the primary access network;
- determine, based on determining that the device is in the active operational mode on the primary access network, whether the carrier-to-interference ratio satisfies a second threshold carrier-to-interference ratio;
- determine, based on the carrier-to-interference ratio being below the second threshold carrier-to-interference ratio, whether the carrier-to-interference ratio is below the second threshold carrier-to-interference ratio for a threshold period of time;
- acquire the alternate access network based on determining that the carrier-to-interference ratio is below the second threshold carrier-to-interference ratio for the threshold period of time;
- return, based on acquiring the alternate access network, to the primary access network;
- determine, based on returning to the primary access network, whether the carrier-to-interference ratio satisfies the first threshold carrier-to-interference ratio;
- and
- perform a handover to the alternate access network based on the carrier-to-interference ratio being below the first threshold carrier-to-interference ratio.

- determine whether to attach to the primary access network or to an alternate access network based on the carrier-to-interference ratio;
- selectively attach to the primary access network or to the alternate access network based on determining that the carrier-to-interference ratio satisfies a first threshold carrier-to-interference ratio;
- determine based on attaching to the primary access network when the carrier-to-interference ratio satisfies the first threshold carrier-to-interference ratio, that the device is in an active operational mode on the primary access network;
- determine, based on determining that the device is in the active operational mode on the primary access network, whether the carrier-to-interference ratio satisfies a second threshold carrier-to-interference ratio;
- determine, based on the carrier-to-interference ratio being below the second threshold carrier-to-interference ratio, whether the carrier-to-interference ratio is below the second threshold carrier-to-interference ratio for a threshold period of time;
