Abstract
Techniques described herein include evaluation and management of device hardware, software, and network resources during streaming, downloading, or playback of video resources on client devices from remote locations. Certain aspects relate to evaluating the current resources available at a client device, such as memory, processing capacity, device battery status, network availability and/or network data quotas, in view of a video resource request. Based on the evaluation of the client device's resources, and estimations of the effects that video streaming/downloading and playback may have on the client device's resources, the client device may control, customize, and/or alter the retrieval or playback of requested video resources.
Claims18
A video playback client device, comprising:
- one or more processors;
- and
- one or more user input components;
- one or more network interfaces configured to receive video content via one or more communication networks;
- and
- memory comprising one or more computer-readable storage media coupled to the one or more processors, the storage media storing therein computer executable instructions, which, when executed by the one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to:
- receive a request from a first entity of one or more entities, via a first user input component of the one or more user input components, to retrieve a particular video resource from a remote video content library;
- determine a required data reception amount for the video playback client device to retrieve the particular video resource, based on determined characteristics of the particular video resource;
- determine a first communication network of the one or more communication networks as associated with the request for the particular video resource at a first time;
- determine a data allocation limit associated with a combination of the first entity and the first communication network;
- control the retrieval of the particular video resource by the video playback client device at the first time, based on a comparison of the data allocation limit to the required data reception amount;
- detect, at a second time subsequent to the first time, during streaming and playback of the particular video resource by the video playback client device, that the video playback client device has changed from streaming the particular video resource over the first communication network to streaming the particular video resource over a second communication network;
- and
- in response to the detecting:
- determine an updated required data reception amount for the video playback client device to retrieve the particular video resource, and an updated data allocation limit associated with a combination of the first entity and the second communication network;
- and
- update control of the retrieval of the particular video resource by the video playback client device at the second time, based on a comparison of the updated data allocation limit to the updated required data reception amount.
A method of managing video content streaming and downloading at a client device, the method comprising:
- receiving, by a client device, a request to retrieve a particular video resource from a remote video content library, the request associated with a first entity of one or more entities;
- determining, by the client device, a required data reception amount for the client device to retrieve the particular video resource, based on one or more determined characteristics of the particular video resource;
- determining, by the client device, a first communication network of one or more communication networks as associated with the request for the particular video resource at a first time;
- determining, by the client device, a data allocation limit associated with the combination of the first entity and the first communication network;
- controlling, by the client device, the retrieval of the particular video resource by the client device at the first time, based on a comparison of the data allocation limit to the required data reception amount;
- detecting, at a second time subsequent to the first time, during streaming and playback of the particular video resource by the video playback client device, that the video playback client device has changed from streaming the particular video resource over the first communication network to streaming the particular video resource over a second communication network;
- and
- in response to the detecting:
- determining an updated required data reception amount for the video playback client device to retrieve the particular video resource, and an updated data allocation limit associated with a combination of the first entity and the second communication network;
- and
- updating the controlling of the retrieval of the particular video resource by the video playback client device at the second time, based on a comparison of the updated data allocation limit to the updated required data reception amount.
