Abstract
Various embodiments concern a system for monitoring a patient in a bed, the system comprising a camera, a user interface comprising a screen, and a computing system. The computing system can be configured to monitor, with the camera, for motion within each of a plurality of zones, the plurality of zones comprising a one or more inner zones extending adjacent along the bed, one or more outer zones extending adjacent along the one or more inner zones, and one or more end zones. Motion within the inner zones can trigger a fall alert while motion within the outer or end zones can suspend one or more functions to prevent the fall alert from being issued. The end zones can comprise a bottom zone and one or more top zones.
Claims24
A system for monitoring a patient on a patient support surface, the system comprising:
- a camera configured to output a plurality of video frames of the patient support surface;
- and
- a computing system configured to:
- receive the plurality of video frames from the camera;
- define a plurality of zones based on the plurality of video frames of the patient support surface, the plurality of zones comprising a left inner zone that extends adjacently along a left side boundary outside of the patient support surface, a left outer zone that extends adjacently along a left side of the left inner zone, a right inner zone that extends adjacently along a right side boundary outside of the patient support surface, a right outer zone that extends adjacently along a right side of the right inner zone, and at least one end zone, each end zone extends along a respective top or bottom side boundary outside of the patient support surface;
- monitor the plurality of video frames for motion within each of the plurality of zones based on a number of edges that are present within the plurality of zones;
- in response to a first motion being detected in one or both of the left inner zone and the right inner zone before the first motion is detected in any of at least the one left outer zone, the right outer zone, and the at least one end zone, issue an alert with a user interface, wherein the first motion is associated with a first person or object;
- and
- in response to a second motion being detected in any of at least the one left outer zone, the right outer zone, and the at least one end zone before the second motion is detected in one or both of the left inner zone and the right inner zone, disarm issuance of the alert, wherein the second motion is associated with a second person or object.
A method for monitoring a patient in a patient support surface, the method comprising:
- receiving a plurality of video frames of a patient support surface at a computing system from a camera;
- defining a plurality of zones based on the plurality of video frames of the patient support surface, the plurality of zones defined at least in part by the computing system, the plurality of zones comprising a left inner zone that extends along a left side boundary outside of the patient support surface, a left outer zone that extends along a left side of the left inner zone, a right inner zone that extends along a right side boundary outside of the support surface, a right outer zone that extends along a right side of the right inner zone, and at least one end zone, each end zone extending along a respective top or bottom side boundary outside of the patient support surface;
- monitoring the plurality of video frames for motion within each of the plurality of zones based on a number of edges that are present within the plurality of zones;
- in response to a first motion being detected in one or both of the left inner zone and the right inner zone before the first motion is detected in any of at least the one left outer zone, the right outer zone, and the at least one end zone, issuing an alert, the alert issued at least in part by the computing system, wherein the first motion is associated with a first person or object;
- and
- in response to a second motion being detected in any of at least the one left outer zone, the right outer zone, and the at least one end zone before the second motion is detected in one or both of the left inner zone and the right inner zone, disarming issuance of the alert, wherein the second motion is associated with a second person or object.
A computing system for monitoring a patient in a patient area, the computing system comprising memory and a processor, the computing system configured to:
- receive a plurality of video frames from a camera showing a patient area;
- monitor the plurality of video frames for motion within each of a plurality of zones based on a number of edges that are present within the plurality of zones, the plurality of zones comprising a left inner zone that extends adjacently along a left side boundary outside of the patient area, a left outer zone that extends adjacently along a left side of the left inner zone, a right inner zone that extends adjacently along a right side boundary outside of the patient area, a right outer zone that extends adjacently along a right side of the right inner zone, and an end zone that extends along a top or bottom side boundary outside of the patient area;
- in response to a first motion being detected in one or both of the left inner zone and the right inner zone before the first motion is detected in any of at least the one left outer zone, the right outer zone, and the at least one end zone, issue an alert indicative of a heightened patient risk state, wherein the first motion is associated with a first person or object;
- and
- in response to a second motion being detected in any of at least the one left outer zone, the right outer zone, and the at least one end zone before the second motion is detected in one or both of the left inner zone and the right inner zone, disarm issuance of the alert, wherein the second motion is associated with a second person or object.
