Abstract
A variety of active cover plate configurations with prongs configured to contact side screw terminals of electrical receptacles are described.
Claims26
An active cover plate comprising:
- a face plate comprising an aperture;
- a prong extending from a back of the face plate, wherein the prong comprises:
- rear insulation comprising at least three sides defining an interior space;
- front insulation abutting the rear insulation and further enclosing the interior space, wherein the rear insulation and front insulation define an opening to the interior space;
- and
- an electrical contact extending inboard through the opening, wherein the electrical contact is to contact a side screw terminal of an electrical receptacle.

An active cover plate comprising:
- a face plate;
- a prong extending from a back of the face plate, wherein the prong comprises:
- (1) a metal clip comprising an upright and a spring;
- and
- (2) an insulating element comprising at least three solid sides and an at least partially open side, wherein the at least three solid sides cover at least a portion of at least three sides of the upright;
- a circuit;
- and
- a wire connecting the metal clip to the circuit;
- wherein the spring extends from the upright and out of the at least partially open side of the insulating element.

An active cover plate configured to interface with an electrical receptacle comprising:
- a face plate comprising an aperture;
- and
- at least one prong extending from a back of the face plate, wherein the prong comprises:
- insulation comprising a cavity, an inboard surface, and an outboard surface, and
- a metal clip comprising (1) a support at least partially disposed in the cavity and (2) a contact, wherein at least a portion of the contact extends from the support through an opening in the inboard surface of the insulation.
