Abstract
Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for a virtual reality exercise game. One of the methods includes determining a head rotation of the user and a head lean of the user on an exercise device based on data from one or more sensors. The method includes presenting a virtual reality environment on a virtual reality headset, wherein the perspective of the user in the virtual world is determined by a vehicle that defines the velocity of the perspective, a body which defines a reference view point of the perspective (with the head looking forward), and a head which defines the view point of the perspective. The method also includes determining to apply rotation to the body in response to determining that a direction of the head rotation is in a direction of the lean.
Claims23
A system comprising:
- a virtual reality headset that has a forward-facing direction in a virtual world when a user wearing it is looking forward;
- a means for receiving steering input from the user, including a sideways position offset of the headset from a vertical seated position on a stationary bike;
- a means for receiving a speed input from the user, including a measured crank speed of a user pedaling on a stationary bike;
- and
- one or more processors configured to synchronize vestibular and visual senses of the user by turning the forward-facing direction only when the user turns a head of the user and steers to the same side;
- wherein receiving the speed input while the forward-facing direction is being rotated produces a curve-following motion, and the rotation of the forward-facing direction can be limited as a function of the speed input, to prevent rotation when the speed is zero and to reduce rotation at high speeds.
A system comprising:

- a means for receiving a speed input from the user, including a measured crank speed of a user pedaling on a stationary bike;
- and
- one or more processors configured to move a virtual location of the user and direction in response to the steering input, the speed input, and headset rotation and position in ways that reduce virtual-reality sickness resulting from different senses of motion between an inner ear and eyes of the user;
- wherein receiving the speed input while the forward-facing direction is being rotated produces a curve-following motion, and the rotation of the forward-facing direction can be limited as a function of the speed input, to prevent rotation when the speed is zero and to reduce rotation at high speeds.
