Abstract
A reinforced refractory container having a cast refractory container which includes a sidewall defining an interior volume, the sidewall having inner and outer surfaces, the container cast from a castable refractory composition, and a wound, continuous fiber tensile reinforcement structure integrated with the container sidewall. A method of fabricating the reinforced refractory container is also provided.
Claims11
A reinforced refractory container comprising:
- (a) a cast refractory container having a sidewall which defines an interior volume, the sidewall having inner and outer surfaces, said container sidewall cast from a refractory castable, said refractory castable comprising refractory aggregate;
- and
- (b) a wound, continuous fiber tensile reinforcement structure comprising a tensile fiber preform having one or more continuously wound tows of continuous fibers, with the refractory castable penetrating interstices between the tows such that the fiber preform is completely encapsulated within the refractory castable of the container sidewall;
- wherein said wound, continuous fiber tensile reinforcement structure comprises a tensile preform having a tubular section with an open weave fiber wall;
- and
- further wherein said one or more wound tows of continuous fibers are chosen from the group consisting of:
- carbon fibers, glass fibers, SiC-based fibers, basalt-based fibers and oxide fibers.
