## Abstract

A base station in a wireless communications network is configured to transmit signals including a plurality of data units, and selecting for transmission a signal configuration including a distribution pattern of reference signals arranged in a predetermined pattern in the data units with a predetermined density. The signal configuration also includes control data indicative of the reference signal density and distribution. A mobile terminal uses the control data to identify the reference signal density and distribution in use by the base station to which it is working or about to hand over, so that it can identify which symbols are appropriate to estimate the channel characteristics. By adapting the symbol density to local circumstances, in particular the likelihood of Doppler spreading, a more reliable acquisition of the base station can be obtained. The symbol density is reduced in the subcarriers remote from the control block, as these are less likely to be used by a mobile terminal in the circumstances in which density can be reduced.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A wireless communications base station configured to transmit signals to mobile terminals, the signals comprising a plurality of resource blocks, the wireless communications base station comprising:
a density adjustment processor responsive to changes in signal quality measurements in communications between the wireless communications base station and the mobile terminals to select a density at which resource blocks in the transmission are to contain reference signals; and
a signal generation processor for compiling a signal for transmission comprising control data contained within a master information block of a data frame providing characterization parameters for the signal, the characterization parameters including control data indicative of a configuration of reference signals in the resource blocks, each configuration comprising a respective distribution pattern of reference signals arranged in the resource blocks, and having a respective density,
wherein the reference signal distribution patterns have a reduced density in resource blocks remote from the master information block, relative to a density of reference signals in resource blocks of a data frame adjacent to the master information block.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A wireless communications base station according to claim 1, wherein a first resource block remote from the master information block has a first reference signal distribution density, and a second resource block remote from the master information block has a second reference signal distribution density, different from the first reference signal distribution density.

### Claim 3

A mobile communications terminal arranged to receive and respond to signals transmitted by a base station, the signals comprising a plurality of resource blocks, the mobile communications terminal comprising:

receive signals transmitted from the base station, the signals being configured according to a first protocol containing a master information block of a data frame including control data indicative of a density of distribution of reference signals in the data blocks;
interpret the control data in the signals to identify a reference signal density and distribution in the received signals, and to use the reference signals to measure properties of the transmissions; and
generate reports of signal quality measurements in communications between the base station and the mobile communications terminal,
wherein the reference signal distributions have a reduced density in resource blocks remote from the master information block, relative to a density of reference signals in resource blocks of a data frame adjacent to the master information block.

### Claim 4

A method of controlling a base station in a wireless communications network, wherein the base station is configured to transmit signals to mobile terminals, the signals comprising a plurality of data blocks, the method comprising:
responding to changes in signal quality measurements in communications between the base station and the mobile terminals by adjusting a resource block density by selecting a signal configuration for transmission from a plurality of signal configurations, each signal configuration including control data contained within a master information block of a data frame providing characterization parameters for the signal, each signal configuration comprising a respective distribution pattern of reference signals arranged in the data blocks, and having respective densities,
wherein the reference signal distribution patterns have a reduced density in regions of the data frame remote from the master information block, relative to a density of reference signals in resource blocks of a data frame adjacent to the master information block,
and wherein the master information block includes control data indicative of reference signal density and distribution.

### Claim 5

A method of controlling a mobile terminal in a wireless communications network, wherein the mobile terminal is configured to receive and respond to signals transmitted by a base station, the signals comprising a plurality of data blocks, the method comprising:
