## Abstract

Coefficient coding for transform units (TUs) during high efficiency video coding (HEVC), and similar standards, toward simplifying design while enhancing efficiency. Elements of the invention include coefficient coding for TUs with up-right diagonal scans being modified, and selectively applying multi-level significance map coding.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An encoding device, comprising:
circuitry configured to:
apply, as a condition that diagonal scan is applied to a first transform block and a second transform block of a plurality of transform bocks, the diagonal scan to the plurality of transform blocks of a plurality of variable block sizes,
wherein the first transform block is of a first block size of the plurality of variable block sizes and the second transform block is of a second block size of the plurality of variable block sizes, and
wherein 4×4 sub-blocks of both the first transform block and the second transform block are diagonally scanned, and the diagonal scan is applied inside each of the 4×4 sub-blocks; and
apply same multi-level significance map encoding to the first transform block of the first block size and the second transform block of the second block size.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The encoding device according to claim 1, wherein the circuitry is configured to apply unified multi-level significance map encoding on the first transform block and the second transform block.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The encoding device according to claim 2, wherein the plurality of variable block sizes includes 4×4, 8×8, 16×16, and 32×32.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The encoding device according to claim 3, wherein the first transform block is based on recursive split of a coding block into the plurality of transform blocks as block partitioning.

### Claim 5

A method, comprising:
applying, as a condition that diagonal scan is applied to a first transform block and a second transform block of a plurality of transform bocks, the diagonal scan to the plurality of transform blocks of a plurality of variable block sizes,
wherein the first transform block is of a first block size of the plurality of variable block sizes and the second transform block is of a second block size of the plurality of variable block sizes, and
wherein 4×4 sub-blocks of both the first transform block and the second transform block are diagonally scanned, and the diagonal scan is applied inside each of the 4×4 sub-blocks; and
applying same multi-level significance map encoding to the first transform block of the first block size and the second transform block of the second block size.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method according to claim 5, further comprising applying unified multi-level significance map encoding on the first transform block and the second transform block.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method according to claim 6, wherein the plurality of variable block sizes includes 4×4, 8×8, 16×16, and 32×32.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method according to claim 7, wherein the first transform block is based on recursively splitting a coding block into the plurality of transform blocks as block partitioning.
