## Abstract

Techniques for interacting with a portion of a content item through a virtual assistant are described herein. The techniques may include identifying a portion of a content item that is relevant to user input and causing an action to be performed related to the portion of the content item. The action may include, for example, displaying the portion of the content item on a smart device in a displayable format that is adapted to a display characteristic of the smart device, performing a task for a user that satisfies the user input, and so on.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A computer-implemented method comprising:
causing a virtual assistant to be output via a first smart device in a first output format to facilitate a conversation with a user;
receiving user input, the user input comprising one or more of speech input, text input, touch input, or gesture input;
identifying a portion of a content item that satisfies the user input;
determining that the user is located within a predetermined distance to a second smart device;
determining that the user has previously interacted with the second smart device;
based at least in part on determining that the user is located within the predetermined distance to the second smart device and determining that the user has previously interacted with the second smart device, and without having received user input to transfer the virtual assistant to the second smart device, determining to output the virtual assistant via the second smart device; and
causing the virtual assistant to be output via the second smart device along with the portion of the content item that satisfies the user input, the portion of the content item being output in a displayable format that is adapted to a display characteristic of the second smart device, the virtual assistant being output via the second smart device in a second output format that is different than the first output format.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the portion of the content item is viewable on the second smart device at a legibility level above a legibility threshold.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the causing the virtual assistant to be output via the second smart device comprises instructing the first smart device to send information to the second smart device via a short-range wireless connection to output the virtual assistant via the second smart device.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the causing the virtual assistant to be output via the second smart device comprises sending information to the second smart device via a short-range wireless connection to output the virtual assistant via the second smart device.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein:
the causing the virtual assistant to be output via the first smart device in the first output format comprises rendering audio representing the virtual assistant via the first smart device; and
the causing the virtual assistant to be output on the second smart device in the second format comprises displaying information representing the virtual assistant via the second smart device.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The computer-implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:
causing one or more pieces of context associated with the user or the virtual assistant to be transferred to the second smart device.

### Claim 7

A system comprising:
one or more processors; and
memory communicatively coupled to the one or more processors and storing executable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
causing a virtual assistant to be output via a first smart device to facilitate a conversation with a user;
receiving user input, the user input comprising one or more of speech input, text input, touch input, or gesture input;
determining that the user is located within a predetermined distance to a second smart device;
based at least in part on determining that the user is located within the predetermined distance to the second smart device and without having received user input to transfer the virtual assistant to the second smart device, determining to output the virtual assistant via the second smart device;
causing the virtual assistant to be output via the second smart device;
identifying a portion of a content item that satisfies the user input; and
displaying the portion of the content item via the second smart device in a displayable format that is adapted to a display characteristic of the second smart device.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The system of claim 7, wherein identifying the portion of the content item that satisfies the user input comprises determining a portion of a content item that is relevant to the user input and that is displayable on the second smart device above a legibility threshold.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The system of claim 7, wherein identifying the portion of the content item that satisfies the user input comprises identifying a portion of a content item that includes a tag related to the user input.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The system of claim 7, wherein identifying the portion of the content item that satisfies the user input comprises:
sending the user input to a remote computing device for processing; and
receiving information from the remote computing device identifying the portion of the content item that satisfies the user input.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The system of claim 7, wherein the content item is formatted for a display that is larger in area than a display of the second smart device.

### Claim 12 (depends on 7)

The system of claim 7, wherein the operations further comprise:
determining a time of day;
wherein the determining to output the virtual assistant via the second smart device is based at least in part on the time of day.
