## Abstract

A recessed downlight fixture and method for installation is provided. The recessed downlight fixture can be installed in a retrofit application, after a ceiling is installed, through a pre-existing opening in that ceiling. Alternatively, a recessed downlight fixture according to a second embodiment can be installed before a ceiling is present. In either embodiment, the light source coupled to, for example, a heat sink, can be universally moved in three degrees of movement, rotationally, along a tilt axis, or further within the ceiling to increase or decrease the recess. All such universal adjustments can take place through and below the ceiling opening during or after installation.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A recessed downlight fixture, comprising:
a first plate having opposed first and second planar surfaces, the first plate configured to couple to at least one ceiling joist;
a base coupled to the first planar surface;
a luminaire housing rotatable within the base and tiltable relative to the base;
a second plate moveably secured on the second planar surface of the first plate; and
a collar coupled to the second plate, wherein the collar forms an aperture that extends through the first plate and the second plate and within outer dimensions of the base.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 1, wherein the collar further comprises a flange that forms the aperture, wherein the flange extends through an opening in a ceiling to a distance substantially equal with a bottom surface of the ceiling.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 2, wherein the flange comprises a circular, rectangular, or square flange forming the aperture.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 1, wherein the second planar surface is below and opposite of the first planar surface.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 1, wherein the collar comprises a circular flange that extends perpendicular to the second plate and the first plate.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 1, wherein the collar is rotatably secured between the second plate and the luminaire housing by at least one screw configured to be placed into a threaded opening in the collar and frictionally engage against the second plate.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 1, wherein the second plate further comprises at least one screw placed through the second plate and into at least one threaded washer that when the at least one screw is tightened the threaded washer frictionally bears against the first planar surface.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 7, further comprising a space between the at least one screw and a cutout in the first plate, wherein the space is configured to allow movement of the second plate within confines of the cutout when the at least one screw is loosened.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 7, wherein the base is substantially circular, rectangular or square, and the collar is substantially circular, rectangular or square.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 9, wherein the threaded washer is substantially circular and comprises a cutout in the outer circumference of its circular shape to accommodate a pin extending from the second plate through the cutout, wherein the pin is configured to prevent the washer from rotating when the at least one screw is tightened.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 1, wherein the luminaire housing comprises a first lever accessible through the collar opening for frictionally engaging the luminaire housing to the base.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 1, wherein the luminaire housing comprises a second lever accessible through the collar aperture for frictionally engaging a heat sink on which a light source is thermally bonded relative to the base.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 1, wherein the luminaire housing comprises:
a heat sink on which a light source is thermally bonded; and
a magnet coupled to an outer surface of the heat sink, the magnet configured to magnetically engage the heat sink in one of two positions relative to the luminaire housing.

### Claim 14

A recessed downlight fixture, comprising:
a first plate having opposed first and second planar surfaces configured to extend between ceiling joists;
a circular base coupled to the first planar surface; and
a second plate moveably secured on the second planar surface and
coupled to a collar dimensioned to form an aperture that extends through the first plate and the second plate and within the circumference of the circular base.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 14, wherein the collar comprises a circular flange surrounding the aperture extending perpendicular to the second planar surface and downward into a room.

### Claim 16 (depends on 14)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 14, wherein the second plate further comprises at least one screw placed through the second plate and into at least one threaded washer such that when the at least one screw is tightened, the threaded washer frictionally bears against the first planar surface.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 16, further comprising a space between the at least one screw and a cutout in the first plate to allow movement of the second plate within the confines of the cutout when the screw is loosened.

### Claim 18 (depends on 16)

The recessed downlight fixture as recited in claim 16, wherein the threaded washer is substantially circular and comprises a cutout in the outer circumference of its circular shape to accommodate a pin extending from the second plate through the cutout to prevent the washer from rotating when the at least one screw is tightened.

### Claim 19

A method for installing a recessed downlight fixture, comprising:
providing a first plate having opposed first and second planar surfaces with a base coupled to the first planar surface and a second plate coupled to a collar that is dimensioned to form an aperture that extends through the first plate and the second plate and within the outer dimensions of the base;
securing the first plate to at least one ceiling joist above a room;
from below the first plate while in the room, moving the collar in two dimensions within a plane parallel to the second planar surface; and
from below the first plate while in the room, rotating the collar within the plane parallel to the second planar surface.

### Claim 20 (depends on 19)

The method as recited in claim 19, wherein after said moving, securing at least one screw within a cutout in the first plate for preventing any further said moving.

### Claim 21 (depends on 19)

The method as recited in claim 19, wherein after said rotating, securing a head of at least one screw against the second plate for preventing any further said rotating.
