## Abstract

A surgical arm positioning system has a cable including two end portions coupled to a connection member of a hand grip. The cable and connection member form a continuous loop. The surgical arm positioning system further includes a frame that supports a number of pulleys. The continuous loop is trained around the pulleys. The surgical arm positioning system also includes a tensile resistance member engaged with the cable. The tensile resistance member provides tensile force to the cable to resist movement of the continuous loop relative to the frame, thereby to hold the patient's arm relatively still during surgery.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A surgical arm positioning system comprising:
a frame having a first frame member and a second frame member;
when mounted to a surgical table that is lying horizontally, the second frame member being supported with respect to the first frame member to form an obtuse angle between the first frame member and the second frame member,
the first frame member having a first longitudinal axis, the second frame member having a second longitudinal axis, wherein the first longitudinal axis intersects the second longitudinal axis when mounted to the surgical table such that the first longitudinal axis and second longitudinal axis lie in the same vertically oriented plane;
a cable having two end portions coupled to a connection member of a hand grip such that the cable and connection member form a continuous loop,
a plurality of pulleys including a first pulley movable along the first frame member and a second pulley movable along the second frame member, wherein the first and second pulleys are linked to that the first and second pulleys move in unison along the respective first and second frame members, wherein the continuous loop is trained around the plurality of pulleys, and
a tensile resistance member engaged with the cable for providing tensile force to the cable thereby to resist movement of the continuous loop.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 1, wherein the tensile resistance member is a clutch providing a resistive torque to one of the pulleys.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 1, further comprising a weight engaged with the cable.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 1, wherein the two end portions form an angle from about 120 to about 180 degrees at the connection member.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 1, wherein when a patient's arm is attached to the connection member, the cable resists movement along the pulleys to keep the patient's arm stationary after the patient's arm is placed at any position having between about 0 degrees and about 30 degrees of arm abduction.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 1, wherein a third pulley of the plurality of pulleys is mounted at a fixed location relative to the frame.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 6, wherein at least one of the first and second pulleys is coupled to a bracket that resists movement along the frame.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 1, further comprising a semi-locked clamp configured to permit pivoting a frame.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 8, wherein the semi-locked clamp provides resistance to rotation of the frame.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 1, further comprising a lower pulley bracket to which the first pulley is coupled and an upper pulley bracket to which the second pulley is coupled, wherein when a patient's arm is attached to the connection member, the lower and upper pulley brackets resist movement relative to the frame to keep the arm stationary and the lower and upper pulley brackets move relative to the frame in response to moving a patient's arm.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 10, wherein movement of one of the lower and upper pulley brackets influences movement of the other of the lower and upper pulley brackets.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 11, wherein a distance between the lower and upper pulley brackets is fixed.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 12, further comprising a connecting rod fixing the distance between the lower and upper pulley brackets and linking the first and second pulleys.

### Claim 14 (depends on 10)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 10, wherein the lower pulley bracket and the upper pulley bracket each extend from a respective channel formed in the corresponding first and second frame member.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The surgical arm positioning system of claim 14, wherein the tensile resistance member comprises a clutch providing a resistive torque to one of the pulleys.

### Claim 16 (depends on 14)
