## Abstract

A lower region of a temporary abutment includes an anti-rotational feature for non-rotationally mating with a dental implant. An upper region of the temporary abutment includes a first anti-rotational structure and at least one retention groove. A top surface of the temporary abutment includes one or more informational markers that provide information concerning the dental implant. A temporary abutment cap is configured to be coupled to the upper region of the temporary abutment. The temporary abutment cap has at least one projection configured to mate with the at least one retention groove of the temporary abutment. The temporary abutment cap has a second anti-rotational structure that is configured to slidably engage the first anti-rotational structure of the temporary abutment. The temporary abutment cap is configured to be coupled with a temporary prosthesis such that the temporary prosthesis and the temporary abutment cap are removable from the temporary abutment.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of creating a patient-specific abutment to be coupled to an implant installed in a mouth of a patient, the method comprising:
non-rotationally attaching a temporary abutment to the implant, the temporary abutment having at least one physical structure indicative of one or more characteristics of the implant; non-rotationally attaching a two-piece temporary prosthetic assembly to the temporary abutment via a screw such that the two-piece temporary prosthetic assembly is removable therefrom, the two-piece temporary prosthetic assembly including a temporary abutment cap and a temporary prosthesis, the temporary abutment cap defining an internal bore with an internal shoulder, wherein the screw extends through the temporary prosthesis, the temporary abutment cap, and the temporary abutment such that a first portion engages with the internal shoulder and a second portion engages with the implant; after a sufficient period of time during which gingival tissue surrounding the temporary prosthetic assembly has healed, removing the temporary prosthetic assembly from the temporary abutment; after the removing, scanning at least a portion of the mouth including the temporary abutment to generate scan data; from the scan data, obtaining emergence profile information for the gingival tissue adjacent to the temporary abutment and physical structure information from the temporary abutment; based on the emergence profile information for the gingival tissue and the physical structure information, creating a three-dimensional model of at least a portion of the mouth; designing a patient-specific abutment from the three-dimensional model; and reattaching the temporary prosthetic assembly after the scanning.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one physical structure includes at least one informational marker.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one physical structure includes a top surface of the temporary abutment.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one physical structure includes a portion of a non-rotational feature of the temporary abutment.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the method further comprises attaching the temporary prosthesis to the temporary abutment cap, the temporary prosthesis having a shape approximating an anatomically shaped tooth for shaping the gingival tissue in an anatomic fashion.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein the non-rotationally attaching the two-piece temporary prosthetic assembly to the temporary abutment includes securing the temporary abutment cap to the temporary abutment and the implant using the screw.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein the temporary prosthesis is acrylic that is molded around and attached to the temporary abutment cap.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising developing instructions for creating the designed patient-specific abutment and transmitting the instructions to a milling machine.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising after the designing:
reremoving the two-piece temporary prosthetic assembly;
removing the temporary abutment from the implant; and
non-rotationally attaching the patient-specific abutment to the implant.

### Claim 10

A method of creating a patient-specific abutment to be coupled to an implant installed in a mouth of a patient, the method comprising:
non-rotationally attaching a temporary abutment to the implant, the temporary abutment having at least one physical structure indicative of one or more characteristics of the implant, the surface, wherein the flange defines a maximum diameter of the temporary abutment, and wherein the flange defines a shoulder; securing a temporary abutment cap to the temporary abutment and the implant using a screw, the temporary abutment cap having a second outer surface and an apical end, wherein a portion of the second outer surface of the temporary abutment cap and a portion of the first outer surface of the flange, including the maximum diameter of the temporary abutment, defines temporary abutment including a subgingival region, a supragingival region, and a flange positioned between the subgingival and supragingival region, the flange having a first outer a shape for shaping gingival tissue when the apical end of the temporary abutment cap contacts the shoulder of the temporary abutment; attaching a temporary prosthesis to the temporary abutment cap; after a sufficient period of time during which gingival tissue surrounding the temporary prosthesis, the temporary abutment cap, and the temporary abutment has healed, removing the temporary prosthesis and the temporary abutment cap from the temporary abutment; after the removing, scanning at least a portion of the mouth including the temporary abutment to generate scan data; from the scan data, obtaining emergence profile information for the gingival tissue adjacent to the temporary abutment and physical structure information from the temporary abutment; based on the emergence profile information for the gingival tissue and the physical structure information, creating a three-dimensional model of at least a portion of the mouth; designing a patient specific abutment from the three-dimensional model; and reattaching the temporary prosthesis and the temporary abutment cap after the scanning.
