Abstract
This document provides orthopedic and dental devices and methods for their use. For example, novel bone drills and dental drills are described. The bone and dental drills have at least some centers of mass that are offset from the drills' axis of rotation. Accordingly, the bone and dental drills may rotate and cut using a precessional pattern of motion. The design facilitates bone cutting, chip formation and hauling capacity, irrigation and bone harvesting. In some embodiments, the bone chips are collected in a removable apparatus fixed to the distal portion of the drill, and the collected bone chips can be used for bone grafting.
Claims20
An apparatus for harvesting bone matter, the apparatus comprising:
- a first canister, the first canister comprising an open cylinder with an inner diameter and an outer diameter, the open cylinder of the first canister including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end including a coupling component configured to attach to a shank of a bone drill bit such that when the coupling component is attached to the shank of the bone drill bit:
- (i) the first canister is rotatable in relation to the bone drill bit and (ii) the coupling component and the first canister are fixed from moving in an axial direction along the bone drill bit;
- and
- a second canister, the second canister comprising an open cylinder with an inner diameter and an outer diameter, the open cylinder of the second canister including a proximal end and a distal end,
- wherein the first canister and the second canister are configured to slidably engage with each other such that, in a retracted configuration, a majority of one of the canisters is positioned substantially within an interior region defined by the other canister, and wherein, in an extended configuration, a majority of each of the canisters is positioned outside of the interior region defined by the other canister.
A bone drill bit and bone matter harvesting system comprising:
- a bone drill bit;
- a first canister, the first canister comprising an open cylinder with an inner diameter and an outer diameter, the open cylinder of the first canister including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end of the first canister including a coupling component attached to a shank of the bone drill bit such that:
- (i) the first canister is rotatable in relation to the bone drill bit and (ii) the coupling component and the first canister are fixed from moving in an axial direction along the bone drill bit;
- and
- a second canister, the second canister comprising an open cylinder with an inner diameter and an outer diameter, the open cylinder of the second canister including a proximal end and a distal end,
- wherein the first canister and the second canister are slidably engaged with each other such that, in a retracted configuration, a majority of one of the canisters is positioned substantially within an interior region defined by the other canister, and wherein, in an extended configuration, a majority of each of the canisters is positioned outside of the interior region defined by the other canister.
An apparatus for harvesting bone matter, the apparatus comprising:
- a proximal collar at a proximal end of the apparatus and including a coupling component that is adapted to attach to a shank of a bone drill bit such that when the coupling component is attached to the shank of the bone drill bit:
- (i) the bone drill bit is rotatable in relation to at least a portion of the proximal collar and (ii) the coupling component is fixed from moving in an axial direction in relation to the bone drill bit;
- and
- a bone harvesting basket extending from the proximal collar and having an open distal end, the bone harvesting basket being telescopic such that the bone harvesting basket is reconfigurable between an axially extended configuration and an axially retracted configuration,
- wherein the apparatus is attachable to the bone drill bit and removable from the bone drill bit.
