An electrowetting apparatus comprising:
- a fluid comprising:
- (i) at least one dye compound with the formula:
- wherein R5 is H;
- R6 is an alkoxy group having the formula —O—Ra, wherein Ra is an alkyl group;
- R8 is H;
- R9 is:
- an alkoxy group having the formula —O— Rd, wherein Rd is an alkyl group;
- an amide group having the formula —NHC(═O)Re, wherein Re is an alkyl group;
- a sulphonamide group having the formula —NH—S(═O)(═O)—Rf, wherein Rf is an alkyl group, or
- an amidophosphate group having the formula —NH—P(═O)(—O—Rg)2, wherein Rg is independently an alkyl group,
- R10 has the formula B-A-,
- wherein B has the formula:
- wherein R11 is H;
- R13 is:
- H,
- a cyano group having the formula —CN,
- an alkyl group Ri, or
- a halogen atom;
- R14 is:
- H,
- a cyano group having the formula —CN,
- a nitro group having the formula —NO2, or
- an alkoxy group having the formula —O— Rk, wherein Rk is an alkyl group;
- a) R7 is:
- N═N-Het1 wherein Het1 is a heterocyclic group;
- R12 is:
- H,
- a cyano group having the formula —CN,
- an alkoxy group having the formula —O—Rh, wherein Rh is an alkyl group,
- an alkyl group Ri, or
- a halogen atom;
- R15 is:
- a cyano group having the formula —CN,

- b) R7 is:
- an amino group having the formula —N(Rh)(Rc), wherein each of Rb and Rc is an alkyl group, or —N═N—Het1 wherein Het1 is a heterocyclic group;
- R12 is:
- a cyano group having the formula —CN,
- R15 is:
- a cyano group having the formula —CN;
- or
- c) R7 is:
- an amino group having the formula —N(Rb)(Rc), wherein each of Rb and Rc is an alkyl group, or
- —N═N—Het1 wherein Het1 is a heterocyclic group;
- R12 is:
- an alkoxy group having the formula —O—Rh, wherein Rh is an alkyl group,
- R15 is:
- a nitro group having the formula —NO2;
- or
- d) R7 is:
- an amino group having the formula —N(Rb)(Rc), wherein each of Rb and Rc is an alkyl group;
- R12 is:
- H,
- a cyano group having the formula —CN,
- an alkoxy group having the formula —O—Rb, wherein Rb is an alkyl group,
- an alkyl group Ri, or
- a halogen atom;
- R15 is:
- a cyano group having the formula —CN;
- wherein A is:
- a single bond, or
- a formula selected from the group consisting of:
- wherein R16 is H;
- R17 is:
- H, or
- an alkoxy group having the formula —O—Ro, wherein Ro is an alkyl group;
