## Abstract

A transmitting apparatus including circuitry configured to generate caption data corresponding to content data and having elements defined in Extensible Markup Language (XML), and output the content data and the generated caption data to a reproducing device.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A transmitting apparatus comprising:
circuitry configured to:
receive caption data corresponding to content data, the caption data being in an extended Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers Timed Text (SMPTE-TT) format defining a caption display mode indicating one of a pop-on mode, a roll-up mode, and a paint-on mode;
receive a user selection of a different caption display mode indicating another one of the pop-on mode, the roll-up mode, and the paint-on mode;
generate caption information by overwriting the caption display mode of the received caption data based on the received user selection of the different caption display mode; and
output the content data and the generated caption information to a reproducing device.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The transmitting apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a non-volatile memory, wherein
the received user selection of the different caption display mode is stored in the non-volatile memory as an initial user setting before the caption data is received.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The transmitting apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the circuitry is further configured to
superimpose the generated caption information on the content data; and
output the superimposed generated caption information on the content data to the reproducing device.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The transmitting apparatus according to claim 3, wherein the circuitry is further configured to
receive an updated user selection of the different caption display mode during outputting the superimposed generated caption information on the content to the reproducing device;
generate updated caption information by overwriting the caption display mode of the received caption data based on the received updated user selection of the different caption display mode; and
output the content data and the generated updated caption information to the reproducing device.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The transmitting apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the circuitry is configured to
receive an updated user selection of the different caption display mode during outputting the content data and the generated caption information to the reproducing device;
generate updated caption information by overwriting the caption display mode of the received caption data based on the received updated user selection of the different caption display mode; and
output the content data and the generated updated caption information to the reproducing device.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The transmitting apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the circuitry is further configured to receive a user setting to specify a drawing rate when the roll-up mode or the paint-on mode is the user selection of the different caption display mode.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The transmitting apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the circuitry is configured to receive a user setting of a caption character edge type indicating one of a right drop shadow edge, a raised edge, a depressed edge, and a uniform edge.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The transmitting apparatus according to claim 1, wherein
the circuitry is further configured to separate the received caption data in time series to generate intermediate synchronic documents corresponding to each display timing of the received caption data, and
the circuitry generates the caption information by overwriting elements of the intermediate synchronic documents based on the received user selection of the different caption display mode.

### Claim 9

A transmitting method comprising:
receiving caption data corresponding to content data, the caption data being in an extended Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers Timed Text (SMPTE-TT) format defining a caption display mode indicating one of a pop-on mode, a roll-up mode, and a paint-on mode;
receiving a user selection of a different caption display mode indicating another one of the pop-on mode, the roll-up mode, and the paint-on mode;
generating caption information by overwriting the caption display mode of the received caption data based on the received user selection of the different caption display mode; and
outputting the content data and the generated caption information to a reproducing device.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The transmitting method according to claim 9, further comprising storing
the received user selection of the different caption display mode in non-volatile memory as an initial user setting before the caption data is received.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The transmitting method according to claim 10, further comprising
superimposing the generated caption information on the content data; and
outputting the superimposed generated caption information on the content data to the reproducing device.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The transmitting method according to claim 11, further comprising
receiving an updated user selection of the different caption display mode during outputting the superimposed generated caption information on the content to the reproducing device;
generating updated caption information by overwriting the caption display mode of the received caption data based on the received updated user selection of the different caption display mode; and
outputting the content data and the generated updated caption information to the reproducing device.

### Claim 13 (depends on 9)

The transmitting method according to claim 9, further comprising
receiving an updated user selection of the different caption display mode during outputting the content data and the generated caption information to the reproducing device;
generating updated caption information by overwriting the caption display mode of the received caption data based on the received updated user selection of the different caption display mode; and
outputting the content data and the generated updated caption information to the reproducing device.

### Claim 14 (depends on 9)

The transmitting method according to claim 9, further comprising receiving a user setting to specify a drawing rate when the roll-up mode or the paint-on mode is the user selection of the different caption display mode.

### Claim 15 (depends on 9)

The transmitting method according to claim 9, further comprising receiving a user setting of a caption character edge type indicating one of a right drop shadow edge, a raised edge, a depressed edge, and a uniform edge.
