## Abstract

A cutting element for use in a drilling bit and/or a milling bit having a cutter body made of a substrate having an upper surface, and a superabrasive layer overlying the upper surface of the substrate. The cutting element further includes a sleeve extending around a portion of a side surface of the superabrasive layer and a side surface of the substrate, wherein the sleeve exerts a radially compressive force on the superabrasive layer.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A cutting element for use in a drilling and/or milling bit, comprising:
a substrate having an upper surface;
a superabrasive layer overlying the upper surface of the substrate, wherein the superabrasive layer comprises an upper surface, a rear surface secured to the upper surface of the substrate, and a side surface extending between the upper surface and the rear surface of the superabrasive layer; and
a sleeve in direct contact with and extending around at least a portion of the side surface of the superabrasive layer and of a side surface of the substrate, wherein the sleeve exerts a radially compressive force on the superabrasive layer greater than a radially compressive force on the substrate.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The cutting element of claim 1, wherein the sleeve extends over at least a portion of the upper surface of the superabrasive layer.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The cutting element of claim 2, wherein the sleeve extends over a majority of the upper surface of the superabrasive layer.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The cutting element of claim 2, wherein the sleeve extends over an entirety of the upper surface of the superabrasive layer.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

The cutting element of claim 2, wherein a portion of the sleeve extending over the at least a portion of the upper surface of the superabrasive layer comprises a central opening therein, a portion of the upper surface of the superabrasive layer exposed within the central opening.

### Claim 6 (depends on 2)

The cutting element of claim 2, wherein a portion of the sleeve extending over the at least a portion of the upper surface of the superabrasive layer comprises an opening therein such that at least a portion of the side surface of the superabrasive layer and at least a portion of the upper surface adjacent the side surface of the superabrasive layer is exposed.

### Claim 7 (depends on 2)

The cutting element of claim 2, wherein the sleeve is in direct contact with the upper surface of the superabrasive layer.

### Claim 8 (depends on 2)

The cutting element of claim 2, wherein the superabrasive layer comprises a chamfered surface between the upper surface and the side surface of the superabrasive layer extending at an angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the cutting element.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The cutting element of claim 8, wherein a material having a Mohs hardness less than a Mohs hardness of the superabrasive layer is disposed between an inner surface of the sleeve and the chamfered surface of the superabrasive layer.

### Claim 10 (depends on 2)

The cutting element of claim 2, wherein a portion of the sleeve extending over the at least a portion of the upper surface of the superabrasive layer exerts an axially compressive force on the upper surface of the superabrasive layer.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The cutting element of claim 1, wherein the sleeve comprises a material different from each of the superabrasive layer and the substrate.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

An earth-boring tool comprising a tool body and the cutting element of claim 1 coupled to the tool body.

### Claim 13

A cutting element for use in a drilling and/or milling bit, comprising:
a substrate;
a superabrasive layer over the substrate; and
a sleeve in direct contact with and extending circumferentially about at least a portion of the superabrasive layer and of the substrate, wherein the sleeve exerts a compressive force on the superabrasive layer greater than a compressive force on the substrate.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The cutting element of claim 13, wherein the sleeve exerts a radially compressive force on a side surface of the superabrasive layer and on a side surface of the substrate.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The cutting element of claim 13, wherein the sleeve exerts an axially compressive force on the superabrasive layer.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The cutting element of claim 15, wherein the sleeve extends over at least a portion of an upper surface of the superabrasive layer.

### Claim 17 (depends on 13)

The cutting element of claim 13, wherein the sleeve exerts a radially compressive force and an axially compressive force on the superabrasive layer.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The cutting element of claim 17, wherein:
the superabrasive layer comprises a chamfered surface extending at an angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the cutting element between an upper surface and a side surface of the superabrasive layer; and
