## Abstract

A coated abrasive article includes a backing, a make layer, crushed abrasive particles, and a size layer. The crushed abrasive particles include: 35 to 100 weight percent of initial crushed abrasive particles having a first composition and first size grade, wherein a majority of the initial crushed abrasive particles are platey crushed abrasive particles, and wherein each platey crushed abrasive particle has a respective length, width, and thickness; and 0 to 65 weight percent of crushed filler particles having a second composition and a second size grade. The first and second compositions and/or size grades are different. The coated abrasive article has a direction of intended use, a majority of the platey crushed abrasive particles of the coated abrasive article are positioned with their thickness oriented substantially parallel to the direction of intended use. A method of making the coated abrasive article is also disclosed.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of making a coated abrasive article, the method comprising the steps:
a) providing a production tool having a working surface, wherein the working surface defines a plurality of oriented cavities, wherein the oriented cavities have respective elongate outer openings at the working surface, and wherein the respective elongate outer openings have respective maximum lengths oriented along respective longitudinal directions;
b) providing a backing having a make layer precursor disposed on at least a portion of a first major surface thereof;
c) disposing a plurality of initial crushed abrasive particles into at least a portion of the plurality of oriented cavities to form a loaded production tool, wherein the initial crushed abrasive particles have a first composition and first size grade, wherein a majority of the initial crushed abrasive particles are platey crushed abrasive particles, wherein each platey crushed abrasive particle has a respective length, width, and thickness, and wherein a majority of the platey crushed abrasive particles contained within the plurality of oriented cavities are respectively aligned substantially parallel to the longitudinal direction of the opening of the cavity in which it is disposed;
d) transferring at least a portion of the initial crushed abrasive particles disposed within the plurality of oriented cavities of the loaded production tool onto at least a portion of the make layer precursor;
e) adhering crushed filler particles to the make layer precursor, wherein the crushed filler particles have a second composition and a second size grade, and wherein:
i) the first and second compositions are different;
ii) the first and second size grades are different; or
iii) both of i) and ii);
f) at least partially curing the make layer precursor;
g) disposing a size layer precursor onto at least a portion of the make layer precursor and platey crushed abrasive particles; and
h) at least partially curing the size layer precursor.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the total weight of the initial crushed abrasive particles is greater than the total weight of the crushed filler particles.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the coated abrasive article has a direction of intended use, and wherein a majority of the platey crushed abrasive particles of the coated abrasive article are positioned with their thickness oriented substantially parallel to the direction of intended use.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the oriented cavities have closed bottoms.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the elongate outer openings of at least a portion of the oriented cavities are rectangular.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein a majority of the oriented cavities of the loaded production tool each contain a respective single platey crushed abrasive particle.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein a majority of the platey crushed abrasive particles are disposed completely within respective oriented cavities.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the platey crushed abrasive particles comprise alumina.
