Abstract
Methods, systems and devices for treating a patient include providing a tissue treatment element constructed and arranged to deliver energy to tissue and treating tissue of the gastrointestinal tract by causing the tissue treatment element to deliver energy to an energy delivery zone. Treatment results in a reduction in the luminal surface area of at least a portion of the gastrointestinal tract. In particular embodiments, the methods, systems and devices are used to treat diabetes.
Claims25
A system for fractionally delivering energy to a tissue treatment zone in a gastrointestinal tract duodenum of a patient, said system comprising:
- an elongate shaft with a distal portion;
- a tissue treatment assembly positioned on the elongate shaft, wherein the tissue treatment assembly is configured to deliver energy to 50 to 3000 inward facing target surfaces per square centimeter of target tissue positioned in at least one energy delivery zone;
- and
- an energy delivery unit connected to the tissue treatment assembly and configured to deliver energy to at least a portion of the 50 to 3000 discrete inward facing surfaces of each energy delivery zone and not to deliver energy to non-target tissue positioned between each of the inward facing target surfaces of the at least one energy delivery zone to safely reduce the luminal surface area of at least a portion of the gastrointestinal tract duodenum.
