Compositions for modulating plant growth, seed germination and soil borne diseases comprising anthraquinone derivatives are disclosed.

A method for promoting germination of a seed of a plant comprising
- applying to said seed an amount of a composition consisting essentially of physcion and emodin derived from Reynoutria sachalinensis, effective to promote said germination of said seed of said plant wherein said plant is selected from soy, wheat, rice, and corn.
