Template-based configuration and management of telecommunications services

A method for use in a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telecommunications system, comprising:

• identifying a provisioning template for at least one extension of a client entity, wherein the provisioning template includes configuration parameters for providing one or more call processing functions to the extensions;
• configuring the extension for the one or more call processing functions based on the provisioning template;
• receiving by a call control engine of a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) server, a VoIP call from a VoIP endpoint device, the VoIP server configured and arranged to interface with a plurality of remotely-situated client entities using a first programming language that relates to a message exchange protocol between the VoIP server and data sources, where the first programming language includes a set of instructions common to each of the remotely-situated client entities and forms a call control template to be populated with client-specific directives;
• identifying at least one call control template written in a second programming language that is different than the first programming language by providing less instructional control over the call control engine than the first programming language and that further relates to the message exchange protocol between the VoIP server and the data sources, wherein the call control template includes call processing functions common to a plurality of end-users of the client entity;
• executing the call control template to retrieve data from at least one data source, wherein the retrieved data relates to call processing functions for particular end-users of the plurality of end-users;
• and
• implementing one or more call processing functions specified by the call control template as being conditional upon the retrieved data.

A Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) server operated on behalf of a VoIP client entity and configured as a private branch exchange (PBX), the VoIP server comprising:

• one or more computer processor circuits coupled to memory circuits and configured to:
• receive from a VoIP server operated on behalf of a VoIP provider, a common set of instructions written in a first programming language that relates to a message exchange protocol between the VoIP provider server and data sources, where the first programming language includes a set of instructions common to each of a plurality of remotely-situated client entities and form a call control template to be populated with client-specific directives,
• receive from the VoIP server, a provisioning template for at least one extension of the client entity, wherein the provisioning template includes configuration parameters for providing one or more call processing functions to the extension, and the provisioning template is written in a corresponding programming language that uses information from the first programming language to provide the call processing functions;
• and
• provide at least one call control template to the VoIP provider server, wherein the call control template is written in a second programming language that further relates to the message exchange protocol between the VoIP server and the data sources, and instructs the VoIP provider how the client entity is configured for various VoIP services, where the second programming language includes the common set of instructions populated with client-specific directives, the populated template forming programming instructions that instruct the VoIP server how the client entity is to be configured for various VoIP services.
