Abstract
A single pixel of a video display can display respective individual pixels of multiple views. In other words, a video display can include more views for an autostereoscopic image than the physical pixels of the video display would ordinarily support. The physical pixel is time-multiplexed in that the physical pixel displays a pixel of one view for a given time interval and a view multiplexer deflects the light from the physical pixel by a predetermined angle to make the pixel appear in a location corresponding to the pixel of the view. In another time interval, the physical pixel displays a pixel of a different view and the view multiplexer deflects light from the physical pixel by a different predetermined angle to make the pixel appear in a location corresponding to the pixel of the different view.
Claims18
A method for showing multiple views of a multi-view autostereoscopic image on a single physical pixel, the method comprising:
- (a) displaying, on a single physical pixel, a portion of a first of multiple views during a first time interval;
- (b) operating at least one view multiplexer comprising at least one columnar lens of birefringent material to deflect light from the single physical pixel by a predetermined deflection angle, making the first of the multiple views displayed on the single physical pixel appear at a first location associated with a perceived location of a pixel of the first of the multiple views and viewable through the at least one mask and the entire width of at least one lenticle from a first limited viewing perspective for the first time interval, wherein the at least one mask prevents viewing of a different of the multiple views from the first limited viewing perspective;
- (c) displaying, on the single physical pixel, a portion of a second of the multiple views during a second time interval;
- and
- (d) operating the at least one view multiplexer to deflect light from the single physical pixel by a second predetermined deflection angle, making the second of the multiple views displayed on the single physical pixel appear at a second location associated with a perceived location of a pixel of the second of the multiple views and different from the first location and viewable through at least one mask and the entire width of the at least one lenticle from a second limited viewing perspective that is different from the first limited viewing perspective for the second time interval, wherein the at least one mask prevents viewing of a different of the multiple views from the second limited viewing perspective;
- wherein the at least one view multiplexer can sweep across a range of deflection angles to provide more than two views.
A view multiplexer for enabling one or more physical pixels of a display to each display corresponding pixels of multiple views of a multi-view autostereoscopic image, the view multiplexer comprising:
- one or more lenses of birefringent material, each of which deflects light from at least one of the physical pixels at one or more predetermined angles in response to an electrical signal;
- wherein a view displayed on the at least one of the physical pixels is viewable through at least one mask and the entire width of at least one lenticle at a limited viewing perspective, wherein the at least one mask prevents viewing of a different of the multiple views from the limited viewing perspective;
- wherein when the view multiplexer is operated to deflect light from one of the one or more predetermined angles, view displayed on one of the physical pixels is viewable through at least one mask and the entire width of at least one lenticle at a different limited viewing perspective and appears at a first location associated with a perceived location of a pixel of the view and wherein when the view multiplexer is operated to deflect light from another of the one or more predetermined angles, a second view displayed on the one of the physical pixels is viewable through at least one mask from a second limited viewing perspective different from the limited viewing perspective and appears at a second location associated with a perceived location of a pixel of the second view;
- and
- wherein the view multiplexer can sweep across a range of deflection angles to provide more than two views.
An autostereoscopic apparatus for showing multiple views of a multi-view autostereoscopic image in a single physical pixel, comprising:
- at least one view multiplexer, wherein the view multiplexer comprises at least one columnar lens of birefringent material;
- a processor operatively connected to the at least one view multiplexer;
- a memory device that stores instructions executable by the processor to:
- display, on a single physical pixel, a portion of a first of multiple views during a first time interval;
- operate the at least one view multiplexer to deflect light from the single physical pixel by a predetermined deflection angle, making the first of the multiple views displayed on the single physical pixel appear at a first location associated with a perceived location of a pixel of the first of the multiple views and viewable through at least one mask and the entire width of at least one lenticle from a first limited viewing perspective for the first time interval, wherein the at least one mask prevents viewing of a different of the multiple views from the first limited viewing perspective;
- display, on the single physical pixel, a portion of a second of the multiple views during a second time interval;
- and
- operate the at least one view multiplexer to deflect light from the single physical pixel by a second predetermined deflection angle, making the second of the multiple views displayed on the single physical pixel appear at a second location associated with a perceived location of a pixel of the second of the multiple views and different from the first location and viewable through the at least one mask and the entire width of the at least one lenticle from a second limited viewing perspective that is different from the first limited viewing perspective for the second time interval, wherein the at least one mask prevents viewing of a different of the multiple views from the second limited viewing perspective;
- wherein the at least one view multiplexer can cycle through a range of deflection angles to provide more than two views.
