Abstract
The present invention relates to novel thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) that contain alkylene substituted spirocyclic compounds. The present invention provides for TPU which exhibit high temperature resistance.
Claims13
A thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) comprising the reaction product of (1) an aromatic polyisocyanate, (2) an alkylene substituted spirocyclic compound comprising an alkylene substituted saturated spirocyclic-diol, an alkylene substituted saturated spirocyclic-diamine, or a combination thereof, and (3) a polyol consisting of polyethylene glycol or combinations thereof, and wherein the alkylene substituted spirocyclic compound contains two rings containing from 5 to 7 atoms per ring, and where each ring is substituted with an alkylene group that contains from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, terminated by a hydroxy group or an amine where the amine is a primary or secondary amine.
A process of making a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) comprising the steps of:
- (a) reacting (1) an aromatic polyisocyanate, (2) an alkylene substituted spirocyclic compound comprising an alkylene substituted saturated spirocyclic-diol, an alkylene substituted saturated spirocyclic-diamine, or a combination thereof, and (3) a polyol consisting of polyethylene glycol, or combinations thereof and
- wherein the alkylene substituted spirocyclic compound contains two rings containing from 5 to 7 atoms per ring, and where each ring is substituted with an alkylene group that contains from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, terminated by a hydroxy group or an amine where the amine is a a primary or secondary amine;
- (b) extruding the thermoplastic polyurethane obtained in step (a) into a hot extruded tube;
- and (c) cooling the hot extruded tube to below the melting point of the thermoplastic polyurethane composition to produce an extruded thermoplastic polyurethane.
