Abstract
The invention provides transient printed circuit board devices, including active and passive devices that electrically and/or physically transform upon application of at least one internal and/or external stimulus.
Claims50
A transient printed circuit board (PCB) comprising:
- a substrate;
- a plurality of electrical interconnects supported by said substrate;
- wherein at least a portion of said plurality of electrical interconnects comprises at least one pad for receiving a lead from an electronic component;
- wherein at least one of said substrate and said plurality of electrical interconnects comprises a selectively transformable material;
- and
- an actuator responsive to a user initiated external trigger signal, wherein upon a receiver of said transient PCB receiving said external trigger signal said actuator, which is operationally connected to said receiver, directly or indirectly initiates at least partial transformation of said selectively transformable material, thereby providing a programmable transformation of the transient PCB in response to said external trigger signal, wherein said programmable transformation provides a change in function of the transient PCB from a first condition to a second condition;
- and
- wherein said user initiated external trigger signal is a user initiated application of an electric field provided to said transient PCB, a user initiated application of electromagnetic radiation provided to said transient PCB, a user initiated mechanical impact provided to said transient PCB, a user initiated flow of heat provided to said transient PCB, a user initiated flow of heat from said transient PCB or a user initiated application of an RF electric field provided to said transient PCB.

- wherein at least a portion of said plurality of electrical interconnects comprises at least one pad;
- one or more electronic device components electrically connected to said at least one pad;
- wherein at least one of said substrate, said plurality of electrical interconnects and said one or more electronic device components comprises a selectively transformable material;
- and
- an actuator responsive to a user initiated external trigger signal, wherein upon a receiver of said transient PCB receiving said external trigger signal said actuator, which is operationally connected to said receiver, directly or indirectly initiates at least partial transformation of said selectively transformable material, thereby providing a programmable transformation of the transient PCB in response to said external trigger signal, wherein said programmable transformation provides a change in function of the transient PCB from a first condition to a second condition;
- and

- wherein at least a portion of said plurality of electrical interconnects comprises at least one pad for receiving a lead from an electronic component;
- wherein at least one of said substrate and said plurality of electrical interconnects comprises a selectively transformable material;
- and
- an actuator responsive to a user initiated external trigger signal, wherein upon a receiver of said transient PCB receiving said external trigger signal said actuator, which is operationally connected to said receiver, directly or indirectly initiates at least partial transformation of said selectively transformable material, thereby providing a programmable transformation of the transient PCB in response to said external trigger signal, wherein said programmable transformation provides a change in function of the transient PCB from a first condition to a second condition;
- and
- wherein said user initiated external trigger signal is a user initiated application of an electric field provided to said transient PCB, a user initiated application of electromagnetic radiation provided to said transient PCB, a user initiated mechanical impact provided to said transient PCB, a user initiated flow of heat provided to said transient PCB, a user initiated flow of heat from said transient PCB or a user initiated application of an RF electric field provided to said transient PCB;
- and
- exposing said transient PCB to an internal or external stimulus, thereby programmably transforming said transient PCB.
