Abstract
Highly expressive and flexibly programmable foot-operated controllers are described. Specific implementations are intended for musical applications and allow musicians an unprecedented degree of control of a wide variety of musical components and subsystems for recording and/or performance.

A sensor system, comprising:
- piezoresistive fabric;
- a substrate having a plurality of groups of conductive traces disposed thereon, each group of conductive traces forming a sensor with a corresponding portion of the piezoresistive fabric in contact with the group of conductive traces, the group of conductive traces for each sensor being in contact with only one side of the corresponding portion of the piezoresistive fabric;
- and
- sensor circuitry configured to receive a sensor signal from each of the groups of conductive traces, each sensor signal representing pressure on a surface associated with the sensor system.

A sensor system, comprising:
- piezoresistive fabric;
- a substrate having a plurality of pairs of conductive traces disposed thereon, each pair of conductive traces forming a sensor with a corresponding portion of the piezoresistive fabric in contact with the pair of conductive traces, the pair of conductive traces for each sensor being in contact with a same side of the corresponding portion of the piezoresistive fabric;
- and
- sensor circuitry configured to receive a sensor signal from each of the pairs of conductive traces, each sensor signal representing a continuous range of pressure on a surface of the sensor system near the corresponding sensor.

A sensor system, comprising:
- a plurality of pieces of piezoresistive fabric;
- a substrate having a plurality of groups of conductive traces disposed thereon, each group of conductive traces forming a sensor with a corresponding one of the pieces of piezoresistive fabric in contact with the group of conductive traces, the group of conductive traces for each sensor being in contact with only one side of the corresponding piece of the piezoresistive fabric;
- and
- sensor circuitry configured to receive a sensor signal from each of the groups of conductive traces, each sensor signal representing pressure on a surface associated with the sensor system.
