Abstract
A vehicle includes an engine, a motor, a high voltage traction battery, and a controller. The engine and the motor are each configured to propel the vehicle. The battery is configured to power the motor. The controller is programmed to selectively start the engine based on a state of charge of the battery and air pollution content such that as the air pollution content increases a state of charge engine startup threshold decreases.

A vehicle comprising:
- an engine and a motor each configured to propel the vehicle;
- a battery configured to power the motor;
- and
- a controller programmed to selectively start the engine based on a state of charge of the battery and air pollution content such that as the air pollution content increases a state of charge engine startup threshold decreases.
