Abstract
Arthroplasty components include an articular surface and a bone-facing surface. The bone-facing surface includes a concave arrangement of planar surfaces which converge as they approach a middle portion of the articular surface. Instruments and implantation methods are also disclosed.
Claims33
An arthroplasty system, comprising:
- a small size prosthesis with an articular surface having a small radius of curvature;
- a medium size prosthesis with an articular surface having a medium radius of curvature;
- and
- a large size prosthesis with an articular surface having a large radius of curvature;
- wherein the articular surfaces of the small, medium, and large size prostheses pass through a first pair of points on opposite sides of a circle which has a fixed relationship to a group of bone-facing features common to the small, medium, and large size prostheses;
- wherein the articular surfaces of the small, medium, and large size prostheses pass through a second pair of points on opposite sides of the circle, wherein the second pair of points is circumferentially spaced apart from the first pair of points;
- wherein the small, medium, and large size prostheses require the same bone preparation for the group of bone-facing features.
4 more elements
An arthroplasty system, comprising:
- a first size prosthesis with a first articular surface and a first bone-facing side, wherein the first articular surface comprises a first radius of curvature, wherein the first bone-facing side comprises first and second bone-facing surfaces that intersect to form a first edge;
- and
- a second size prosthesis with a second articular surface and a second bone-facing side, wherein the second articular surface comprises a second radius of curvature, wherein the second bone-facing side comprises third and fourth bone-facing surfaces that intersect to form a second edge, wherein the second radius of curvature is a different size than the first radius of curvature;
- wherein when the first and second size prostheses are superimposed, the first and third bone-facing surfaces superimpose exactly, the second and fourth bone-facing surfaces superimpose exactly, the first and second edges superimpose exactly and lie in a plane that contains a circle, and the first and second articular surfaces pass through a first pair of points on opposite sides of the circle.
1 more element
An arthroplasty system, comprising:
- a first prosthesis comprising a first articular surface and a first bone-facing side opposite the first articular surface, wherein the first articular surface comprises a first radius of curvature and passes through a first pair of points on opposite sides of a circle, wherein the first bone-facing side comprises first and second surfaces that intersect to form a first edge, wherein the first edge lies in a plane that contains the circle;
- and
- a reamer comprising bone-facing cutting features surrounded by a non-cutting bone-facing edge that corresponds to the circle so that in use, the bone-facing cutting features cut bone as the reamer is advanced until the bone-facing edge contacts bone to stop further bone cutting by the reamer.
An arthroplasty system, comprising:
- a small size prosthesis with an articular surface having a small radius of curvature;
- a medium size prosthesis with an articular surface having a medium radius of curvature;
- and
- a large size prosthesis with an articular surface having a large radius of curvature;
- wherein the articular surfaces of the small, medium, and large size prostheses pass through a first pair of points on opposite sides of a circle which has a fixed relationship to a group of bone-facing features common to the small, medium, and large size prostheses, wherein the group of bone-facing features includes an edge that lies in a plane that contains the circle, wherein the group of bone-facing features includes first and second surfaces that intersect to form the edge;
- wherein the small, medium, and large size prostheses require the same bone preparation for the group of bone-facing features.
