Abstract
Methods for fabricating three-dimensional objects by 3D-inkjet printing technology are provided. The methods utilize curable materials that polymerize via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) for fabricating the object. Systems suitable for performing these methods and kits containing modeling material formulations usable in the methods are also provided.
Claims40
A method of fabricating a three-dimensional object, the method comprising sequentially forming a plurality of layers in a configured pattern corresponding to the shape of the object, thereby forming the object,
- wherein said formation of each layer comprises dispensing by at least one inkjet printing head at least one modeling material formulation, said at least one modeling material formulation comprising an unsaturated cyclic monomer polymerizable by ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and a catalyst for initiating ROMP of said monomer;
- and
- exposing the modeling material formulation to a condition for inducing initiation of ROMP of said monomer by said catalyst, to thereby obtain a cured modeling material,
- wherein prior to said exposing said catalyst does not initiate ROMP of said monomer,
- wherein said at least one modeling material formulation is characterized by a viscosity of no more than 35 centipoises at a temperature of said inkjet printing head during said dispensing,
- and wherein said at least one modeling material formulation further comprises an activator for chemically activating said catalyst towards initiating ROMP of said monomer, and wherein prior to said exposing, said activator is incapable of activating said catalyst.
