Context-based coordinated data retrieval for mobile devices

A computer program product comprising:

• a computer readable storage medium readable by a processing circuit and storing instructions for execution by the processing circuit for performing a method comprising:
• updating a local rules cache based on a change in operating context under which a mobile device currently operates, the updating comprising:
• recognizing the change in context under which the mobile device currently operates;
• querying a cloud-based rules engine for rules applicable to the changed context, the cloud-based rules engine having a plurality of rules for retrieving data for responding to requests for data from input-output (I/O) devices under operating contexts;
• receiving, the runtime and with the mobile device operating under the changed context, a set of rules in response to the querying;
• and
• storing the set of rules to the local rules cache;
• based on the operating context of the mobile device, selecting one or more rules from the local rules cache, the received set of rules being at least one rule of the one or more rules, the one or more rules representative of at least one option for retrieving data from an input-output (I/O) device for responding to a data-retrieval request for data from the I/O device, the request being made to an interface of the mobile device by application code of the mobile device;
• determining, based on the one or more rules, how to retrieve data for responding to the request;
• and
• performing one or more actions based on the determining, the one or more actions comprising responding to the request.

A computer system comprising:

• a memory;
• and
• a processor in communication with the memory, wherein the computer system is configured to perform a method, the method comprising:
• updating a local rules cache based on a change in operating context under which a mobile device currently operates, the updating comprising:
• recognizing the change in context under which the mobile device currently operates;
• querying a cloud-based rules engine for rules applicable to the changed context, the cloud-based rules engine having a plurality of rules for retrieving data for responding to requests for data from input-output (I/O) devices under different operating context;
• receiving, at runtime and with the mobile device operating under the changed context, a set of rules in response to the querying;
• and
• storing the set of the local rules cache;
• based on the operating context of the mobile device, selecting one or more rules from the local rules cache, the received set of rules being at least one rule of the one or more rules, the one or more rules representative of at least one option for retrieving data from an input-output (I/O) device for responding to a data-retrieval request for data from the I/O device, the request being made to an interface of the mobile device by application code of the mobile device;
• determining, based on the one or more rules, how to retrieve data for responding to the request;
• and
• performing one or more actions based on the determining, the one or more actions comprising responding to the request.
