Systems and methods of disk storage allocation for virtual machines

A system comprising:

• one or more computing devices including one or more processors and communicatively coupled to a plurality of physical disks, the one or more computing devices configured to perform operations comprising:
• receiving a request to allocate a block of disk storage on a physical disk to a virtual disk associated with a virtual machine;
• identifying a first block on a first physical disk based on a determination that the first block has an outermost radial distance from a center axis of the first physical disk of a plurality of available blocks on the first physical disk;
• identifying a second block on a second physical disk based on a determination that the second block has an outermost radial distance from a center axis of the second physical disk of a plurality of available blocks on the second physical disk;
• comparing radial distances of the first block on the first physical disk and the second block on the second physical disk;
• based on the comparing, selecting a particular block of the first block and the second block having a greater radial distance;
• and
• allocating the selected particular block to the virtual machine.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having computer-executable instructions embodied thereon, wherein, when executed by at least one processor, the computer-executable instructions cause the at least one processor to:

• receiving a request to allocate a block of disk storage on a physical disk to a virtual disk associated with a virtual machine;
• identifying a first block on a first physical disk based on a determination that the first block has an outermost radial distance from a center axis of the first physical disk of a plurality of available blocks on the first physical disk;
• identifying a second block on a second physical disk based on a determination that the second block has an outermost radial distance from a center axis of the second physical disk of a plurality of available blocks on the second physical disk;
• comparing radial distances of the first block on the first physical disk and the second block on the second physical disk;
• based on the comparing, selecting a particular block of the first block and the second block having a greater radial distance;
• and
• allocating the selected particular block to the virtual machine.
