## Abstract

A jaw member includes an insulative member and a substrate. The substrate is formed as a single, integral component that has first and second side portions interconnected by a connector portion. The connector portion has first and second side portions that are interconnected by an arc-shaped portion. The connector portion is configured to be removed before use of the jaw member such that the first and second portions are electrically insulated from one another.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A jaw member, comprising:
an insulative member; and
a substrate formed as a single, integral component having first and second portions interconnected by a connector portion, the connector portion including first and second side portions interconnected by an arc-shaped portion, the connector portion configured to be removed before use of the jaw member such that the first and second portions are electrically insulated from one another.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The jaw member according to claim 1, wherein the substrate is an electrically-conductive plate.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The jaw member according to claim 1, wherein the substrate is formed via stamping.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The jaw member according to claim 1, wherein the insulative member is overmolded on the substrate.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The jaw member according to claim 4, wherein the substrate includes at least one flange configured to overmold the substrate onto the insulative member.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The jaw member according to claim 1, wherein the insulative member forms an outer insulative housing that supports the substrate and an insulative spacer disposed between the first and second portions.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The jaw member according to claim 1, wherein the substrate is perforated where each of the first and second portions meet the connector portion.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The jaw member according to claim 1, further comprising a frame, the insulative member engaged about the frame.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The jaw member according to claim 1, wherein the first and second portions are configured to independently connect to a source of energy.

### Claim 10

A surgical instrument comprising:
a handle assembly;
a shaft extending distally from the handle assembly; and
an end effector supported at a distal end of the shaft and including first and second jaw members movable by the handle assembly between an open configuration in which the first and second jaw members are spaced apart from one another and a closed configuration in which the first and second jaw members are configured to grasp tissue therebetween, the first jaw member including:
an insulative member; and
a substrate formed as a single, integral component having first and second portions interconnected by a connector portion, the connector portion including first and second side portions interconnected by an arc-shaped portion, the connector portion configured to be removed before use of the jaw member such that the first and second portions are electrically insulated from one another.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The surgical instrument according to claim 10, wherein the substrate is an electrically-conductive plate.

### Claim 12 (depends on 10)

The surgical instrument according to claim 10, wherein the substrate is formed via stamping.

### Claim 13 (depends on 10)

The surgical instrument according to claim 10, wherein the insulative member is overmolded on the substrate.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The surgical instrument according to claim 13, wherein the substrate includes at least one flange configured to overmold the substrate onto the insulative member.

### Claim 15 (depends on 10)

The surgical instrument according to claim 10, wherein the insulative member forms an outer insulative housing that supports the substrate and an insulative spacer disposed between the first and second portions.

### Claim 16 (depends on 10)

The surgical instrument according to claim 10, wherein the substrate is perforated where each of the first and second portions meet the connector portion.

### Claim 17 (depends on 10)

The surgical instrument according to claim 10, wherein the first jaw member includes a frame, the insulative member engaged about the frame.

### Claim 18 (depends on 10)

The surgical instrument according to claim 10, wherein the first and second portions are configured to independently connect to a source of energy.

### Claim 19 (depends on 10)

The surgical instrument according to claim 10, wherein the second jaw member includes:
an insulative member; and
a substrate formed as a single, integral component having first and second portions interconnected by a connector portion, the connector portion including first and second side portions interconnected by an arc-shaped portion, the connector portion configured to be removed before use of the jaw member such that the first and second portions are electrically insulated from one another.
