## Abstract

An aerosol-generating system includes a liquid storage portion including housing holding a liquid aerosol-forming substrate and a capillary medium. The housing has an opening. A fluid permeable heater assembly includes an arrangement of electrically conductive filaments arranged to define an air impingement surface. The fluid permeable heater assembly extends across the opening of the housing. The filament arrangement defines a filament opening allowing airflow to pass through. The capillary medium is provided in contact with the heater assembly. The capillary medium is configured to draw the liquid aerosol forming substrate to the electrically conductive filament arrangement. The capillary medium includes a capillary medium opening extending the filament opening through the capillary medium.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An aerosol-generating system comprising:
a liquid storage portion comprising a housing holding a liquid aerosol-forming substrate and a capillary medium, the housing having an opening;
a fluid permeable heater assembly comprising an arrangement of electrically conductive filaments arranged to define an air impingement surface, wherein the fluid permeable heater assembly extends across the opening of the housing, the electrically conductive filaments forming a mesh, wherein the filament arrangement defines a filament opening allowing airflow to pass through, the filament opening having an area at least five times larger than an area of an interstice between filaments of the filament arrangement forming the mesh; and
wherein the capillary medium is provided in contact with the heater assembly, the capillary medium is configured to draw the liquid aerosol forming substrate to the electrically conductive filament arrangement, and the capillary medium comprises a capillary medium opening extending the filament opening through the capillary medium.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

An aerosol-generating system according to claim 1, wherein the filament arrangement is of planar shape.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

An aerosol-generating system according to claim 1, wherein the filament arrangement is of non-planar shape.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

An aerosol-generating system according to claim 3, wherein the filament arrangement is curved along one or more dimensions.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

An aerosol-generating system according to claim 1, wherein the filament arrangement is funnel shaped.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

An aerosol-generating system according to claim 1, wherein the capillary medium is of cylindrical shape, and wherein the capillary medium opening is a central opening.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

An aerosol-generating system according to claim 1, wherein the aerosol-generating system is configured such that when vapor is generated at the fluid permeable heater assembly, the vapor is transported by an airflow through the capillary medium opening, and wherein guiding the airflow through the capillary medium opening causes accelerating the airflow.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

An aerosol-generating system according to claim 1, wherein position and shape of the filament arrangement are dimensioned and arranged such that when an airflow is guided to the air impingement surface of the filament arrangement, the air flow is whirled around the air impingement surface.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

An aerosol-generating system according to claim 1, wherein the heater assembly comprises a first electrically conductive contact portion located at an interior boundary line of the filament arrangement to the filament opening and a second electrically conductive contact portion located at an exterior boundary line of the filament arrangement, and wherein the first electrically conductive contact portion is guided through the capillary medium opening.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

An aerosol-generating system according to claim 1, wherein the system comprises a main unit and a cartridge that is removably coupled to the main unit, wherein the liquid storage portion and heater assembly are provided in the cartridge and the main unit comprises a power supply.

### Claim 11

A method of manufacture of a cartridge for use in an electrically operated aerosol-generating system, comprising:
providing a liquid storage portion comprising a housing having an opening;
providing a capillary medium within the liquid storage portion;
filling the liquid storage portion with liquid aerosol-forming substrate; and
providing a fluid permeable heater assembly comprising an arrangement of electrically conductive filaments arranged to define an air impingement surface, the electrically conductive filaments forming a mesh, wherein the fluid permeable heater assembly extends across the opening of the housing, and wherein the filament arrangement defines a filament opening allowing airflow to pass through, the filament opening having an area at least five times larger than an area of an interstice between filaments of the filament arrangement forming the mesh; and
wherein the capillary medium is provided in contact with the heater assembly, and the capillary medium comprises a capillary medium opening allowing airflow to pass through the capillary medium.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein the fluid permeable heater assembly is formed from an initially flat filament arrangement that is deformed to define a non-planar air impingement surface.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein the fluid permeable heater assembly is fixed to the housing of the liquid storage portion by heat sealing, gluing or welding the heater assembly to the housing of the liquid storage portion.
