Linear Progression based window management

A computer-implemented method comprising:

• determining a first ordering of a plurality of windows in a graphical user interface (GUI) based on an z-coordinate depth of each window of the plurality of windows corresponding to an order by which each window of the plurality of windows was last accessed, wherein said GUI comprises at least an x-coordinate plane and a y-coordinate plane in which a position of each window of the plurality of windows is defined;
• identifying a first window from the first ordering, that is most recently accessed and that has a smallest z-coordinate depth of the plurality of windows in the first ordering, as a current frontmost window;
• producing a second ordering by resorting the plurality of windows from the first ordering based on an x-coordinate position of each window of the plurality of windows, the x-coordinate position of each window corresponding to a horizontal position of each window in said GUI;
• receiving directional input that is issued in a first direction;
• identifying the first window, within the second ordering, and a second window that is a next window in the first direction to the first window in the second ordering based on the second window having a next closest x-coordinate position in the first direction to a particular x-coordinate position of the first window in said GUI;
• linearly switching the frontmost window in response to the directional input, wherein said linearly switching comprises changing the second window to be the frontmost window in said GUI instead of the first window, wherein changing the frontmost window leaves x-coordinate and y-coordinate positioning of the plurality of windows unaltered.
