Tab release child safety feature

A child-resistant container comprising:

• a. a container body having a base, a sidewall extending upward from the base and terminating in a top end, a mouth in the top end that provides access to an interior of the container body, and a ring protruding radially forward from the sidewall, proximal the top end;
• b. a lid having a proximal portion mounted in pivotable relation to the container body by a hinge and a distal portion opposite the hinge, the lid being pivotable between a seated position, wherein the lid covers the mouth and the distal portion of the lid engages the ring, and a raised position, wherein the mouth is at least in part exposed and the distal portion of the lid does not engage the ring;
• and
• c. a mechanism for restricting movement of the lid in its seated position, the mechanism comprising:
• i. a pair of opposing downward-facing abutments defined by the ring, at least a portion of each downward-facing abutment extending generally perpendicular from the container body;
• and
• ii. opposing upward-facing abutments extending from the distal portion of the lid, the upward-facing abutments being aligned with the opposing downward-facing abutments when the lid is in the seated position, wherein each of the upward-facing abutments is spaced radially forward relative to the sidewall of the body when the lid is in the seated position, wherein each downward-facing abutment is in an engagement position with a corresponding upward-facing abutment when the lid is in the seated position, the engagement position being maintained by a biasing force, thus latching the lid closed, the lid being openable by engendering a first motion and a second, opposing motion, each motion being between a respective upward-facing abutment relative to the corresponding downward-facing abutment in a direction opposite the biasing force that maintains a respective engagement position, until the upward-facing abutments are disengaged from the downward-facing abutments, thus allowing the distal portion of the lid to be pivoted about the hinge to move the lid to the raised position.
