Abstract
A sensing catheter having an outer flexible sheath and a distal section containing a sensing system having a sensing means, a radiant energy providing means and radiation transmitting means, preferably all housed within a fluid channel.
Claims12
A flexible sensing catheter for insertion into and use within a narrow mammalian body lumen or passage, comprising:
- a flexible outer catheter sheath having a distal end for insertion into the body lumen or passage;
- a distal catheter section formed at a first end of the catheter sheath, wherein said distal section comprises an inwardly tapered distal first port having a distal tip aperture of reduced internal port diameter, said inwardly tapered distal first port comprising an annular reflective surface at an inside surface of said first port;
- a sensing system comprising:
- (i) a sensor device housed within said catheter distal section near the distal tapered first port and having a sensor for sensing a radiant energy directly from the lumen or passage as the catheter travels through or stops within the lumen or passage;
- and
- (ii) a radiant energy source positioned within said catheter distal section in a location proximal and near to the radiant energy sensor of said sensor device;
- the annular reflective surface adapted for directing radiant energy, provided by the radiant energy source, through an annular channel in the distal catheter section into the body lumen or passage;
- the annular channel formed between the outer sheath and the sensor device and operatively connected to said first port;
- and
- said radiant energy source adapted for transmitting the provided radiant energy through the annular channel in the distal section of the catheter, around the sensor device, and directly into the body lumen or passage through and from the tapered distal first port, said annular channel adapted to simultaneously conduct radiant energy and a fluid flow such that the fluid flow is adapted to travel in at least one fluid flow channel through the flexible sensing catheter to the mammalian body lumen or passage.
A flexible sensing catheter for insertion into and use within a narrow mammalian body lumen or passage, comprising:
- a flexible outer catheter sheath having a distal end for insertion into the body lumen or passage;
- a distal catheter section formed at a first end of the catheter sheath, wherein said distal section comprises an inwardly tapered distal first port having a distal tip aperture of reduced internal port diameter said inwardly tapered distal first port comprising an annular reflective surface at an inside surface of said first port;
- a sensing system comprising:
- (i) a lens housed within said catheter distal section near the distal tapered first port and connected to a fiber optic bundle such that the fiber optic bundle is adapted to receive a radiant energy directly from the lumen or passage as the catheter travels through or stops within the lumen or passage, said fiber optic bundle adapted to connect to a remote sensor located outside a patient;
- and
- (ii) at least one fiber optic guide positioned within said catheter distal section in a location proximal and near to the fiber optic bundle connected to said lens, said at least one fiber optic guide adapted to enable connection to a remote energy source located outside the patient;
- the annular reflective surface adapted for directing radiant energy, provided by said at least one fiber optic guide, through an annular channel in the distal catheter section into the body lumen or passage;
- the annular channel formed between the outer sheath and the lens and operatively connected to said first port;
- and
- said at least one fiber optic guide adapted for transmitting the provided radiant energy through the annular channel in the distal section of the catheter, around the lens, and directly into the body lumen or passage through and from the tapered distal first port, said annular channel adapted to simultaneously conduct radiant energy and a fluid flow through the flexible sensing catheter to the mammalian body lumen or passage.
A flexible sensing catheter for insertion into and use within a narrow mammalian body lumen or passage, comprising:
- a flexible outer catheter sheath having a distal end for insertion into the body lumen or passage;
- a distal catheter section formed at a first end of the catheter sheath, wherein said distal section comprises an inwardly tapered distal first port having a distal tip aperture of reduced internal port diameter, said inwardly tapered distal first port comprising an annular reflective surface at an inside surface of said first port;
- a sensing system comprising:
- (i) a sensor device housed within said catheter distal section near the distal tapered first port and having a sensor for sensing a radiant energy directly from the lumen or passage as the catheter travels through or stops within the lumen or passage;
- and
- (ii) a radiant energy source positioned within said catheter distal section in a location proximal and near to the radiant energy sensor of said sensor device;
- the annular reflective surface adapted for directing radiant energy, provided by the radiant energy source, through an annular channel in the distal catheter section into the body lumen or passage;
- the annular channel formed between the outer sheath and the sensor device and operatively connected to said first port;
- and
- said radiant energy source adapted for transmitting the provided radiant energy through the annular channel in the distal section of the catheter, around the sensor device, and directly into the body lumen or passage through and from the tapered distal first port, said annular channel adapted to simultaneously conduct radiant energy and a fluid flow such that the fluid flow is adapted to travel in at least one fluid flow channel through the flexible sensing catheter to the mammalian body lumen or passage;
- wherein the sensor device is an insertable and removable assembly for positioning within said outer sheath and said catheter comprises a flexible inner fluid isolation sleeve for isolating an inserted sensing device from the remainder of the catheter.
