Abstract
A surgical instrument includes a proximal control mechanism having an instrument control surface. The instrument control surface has two openings through which two resilient latch arms can be inserted to engage a fixed latch structure contained within the proximal control mechanism. The fixed latch structure provides two lead-in ramps that force the resilient latch arms onto locking surfaces. The resilient latch arms are contained entirely within the proximal control mechanism when engaged. Inward forces can be applied to two buttons to apply an outward force on the resilient latch arms and release them from the locking surfaces of the fixed latch structure. Each of the two buttons is accessible from one of two opposite outside surfaces of the proximal control mechanism.
Claims11
A surgical instrument that includes a proximal control mechanism, the proximal control mechanism comprising:
- an instrument control surface on an outer surface of the proximal control mechanism, the instrument control surface including a first opening and a second opening;
- a fixed latch structure contained within the proximal control mechanism, the fixed latch structure including a first lead-in ramp adjacent the first opening and a second lead-in ramp adjacent the second opening, the first lead-in ramp leading to a first locking surface of the fixed latch structure, the second lead-in ramp leading to a second locking surface of the fixed latch structure:
- and two latch release members, each latch release member including a button portion and a latch arm engaging portion extending from the button portion parallel to the instrument control surface, the two latch release members arranged such that moving the two button portions toward each other parallel to the instrument control surface causes the two latch arm engaging portions to move away from one another and release latch arms from the first and second locking surfaces.
A method of latching and releasing a surgical instrument from an instrument sterile adapter that couples the surgical instrument to an instrument carriage, the method comprising:
- inserting two resilient latch arms of the instrument sterile adapter into two corresponding openings in an instrument control surface on a proximal control mechanism of the surgical instrument;
- latching the surgical instrument to the instrument sterile adapter by guiding the two resilient latch arms over two lead-in ramps and onto two locking surfaces of a fixed latch structure contained within the proximal control mechanism;
- and
- releasing the surgical instrument from the instrument sterile adapter by moving two button portions of latch release members toward each other parallel to the instrument control surface to cause two latch arm engaging portions, extending from the two button portions parallel to the instrument control surface, to move the two resilient latch arms away from one another.
