Abstract
A consumable cored wire for measuring a temperature of a molten steel bath includes an optical fiber and a cover laterally surrounding the optical fiber in a plurality of layers. One layer is a metal pipe, also called metal jacket or metal tube. An intermediate layer, also called filler, is arranged beneath the metal tube. The intermediate layer is a rope.
Claims13
A method for measuring a temperature of a molten metal bath using a consumable cored wire, the consumable cored wire comprising an optical fiber, a metal pipe laterally surrounding the optical fiber, and an intermediate layer arranged between the metal pipe and the optical fiber, the intermediate layer comprising a plurality of fibers formed into a rope which fully encircles the optical fiber, the intermediate layer consisting of a material having a melting temperature in the range of between 60% and 95% of the molten metal temperature, the method comprising:
- immersing the consumable cored wire into the molten metal bath, such that the metal pipe melts upon exposure to the molten metal bath and pieces of the intermediate layer are fluidized upon exposure to the molten metal bath, the fluidized pieces of the intermediate layer forming a molten gobular layer which flows away from the optical fiber and exposes an advancing tip of the optical fiber for measuring the temperature of the molten metal bath.
