Abstract
Apparatus, systems, and methods described herein relate to the manufacture and use of single pouch battery cells. In some embodiments, an electrochemical cell includes a first current collector coupled to a first portion of a pouch, the first current collector having a first electrode material disposed thereon, a second current collector coupled to a second portion of the pouch, the second current collector having a second electrode material disposed thereon, and a separator disposed between the first electrode material and the second electrode material. The first portion of the pouch is coupled to the second portion of the pouch to enclose the electrochemical cell.
Claims20
An individual electrochemical cell, comprising:
- a first current collector coupled to a first portion of a pouch, the first current collector having a first electrode material disposed thereon;
- a second current collector coupled to a second portion of the pouch, the second current collector having a second electrode material disposed thereon;
- and
- a separator disposed between the first electrode material and the second electrode material,
- wherein the first portion of the pouch is coupled to the second portion of the pouch to form the individual electrochemical cell,
- at least one of the first electrode material and the second electrode material includes a semi-solid slurry comprising an active material and a conductive material in a non-aqueous liquid electrolyte, and
- at least one of the first current collector and the second current collector is laminated to the pouch with an adhesive.
An individual electrochemical cell, comprising:
- a first electrode coupled to a first portion of a pouch;
- a second electrode coupled to a second portion of the pouch;
- and
- a separator disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode, the separator substantially larger than at least one of the first electrode and second electrode, wherein the separator is sealed between the first portion and the second portion of the pouch to form a sealing region enclosing the individual electrochemical cell,
- wherein at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode includes a semi-solid slurry comprising an active material and a conductive material in a non-aqueous liquid electrolyte, and
- the first electrode is laminated to the first portion of the pouch with an adhesive and/or the second electrode is laminated to the second portion of the pouch with an adhesive.
A method of manufacturing an individual electrochemical cell, the method comprising:
- disposing a first current collector on a first portion of a pouch material;
- disposing a first electrode material on the first current collector;
- disposing a second current collector on a second portion of the pouch material;
- disposing a second electrode material on the second current collector;
- disposing a separator on at least one of the first electrode material and the second electrode material;
- folding the pouch material along a fold line between the first portion and the second portion of the pouch material;
- and
- sealing the pouch material to form a pouch encasing the individual electrochemical cell,
- wherein at least one of the first electrode material and the second electrode material includes a semi-solid slurry comprising an active material and a conductive material in a non-aqueous liquid electrolyte, and
- wherein disposing the first current collector on the first portion of the pouch material includes laminating the first current collector to the first portion of the pouch material with an adhesive and disposing the second current collector on the second portion of the pouch material includes laminating the second current collector to the second portion of the pouch material with an adhesive.
