Abstract
A shock absorbing system for impact energy dissipation employs removable unitary cells of compressible members in communication with a reservoir and containing a first working fluid. Resilient structural members may be placed intermediate the compressible members to deform responsive to compression to provide both energy dissipation and resilient recovery of the compression cylinders to their uncompressed state.
Claims11
A shock absorbing system for impact energy dissipation comprising:
- a surface,
- a least one unitary cell having a plurality of compressible cylinders extending substantially perpendicular to the surface each compressible cylinder containing a first working fluid, and
- a reservoir connected to each of the plurality of compressible cylinders through an associated one of a plurality of fluid conduits, said first working fluid transferred by at least one compressible member through the associated one of the plurality of fluid conduits to the reservoir responsive to compression of the at least one compressible member induced by an impact force;
- wherein each unitary cell is removably affixed to the surface of a foot bed, a helmet shell, a pad, a wall or a liner;
- wherein plurality of compressible cylinders and reservoir are enclosed within an envelope;
- wherein the envelope forms a cavity surrounding the compressible cylinders and the reservoir.
