## Abstract

This invention provides novel compounds and methods for promoting cell survival and/or plasticity, especially in neuronal cells, by targeting the microtubule End Binding (EB) proteins and other associated proteins (e.g., drebrin). Methods for identifying potential modulators of cell death/plasticity are also described.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An isolated peptide consisting of the amino acid sequence of SKIP (SEQ ID NO: 6), which is acetylated at the N-terminus and amidated at the C-terminus in an effective amount to inhibit cell death or increase cell plasticity.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The peptide of claim 1, wherein the amino acid sequence of SKIP (SEQ ID NO:6) comprises at least one D-amino acid.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The peptide of claim 2, wherein the amino acid sequence of SKIP (SEQ ID NO:6) is all D-amino acid SKIP.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The peptide of claim 1, wherein the cell is a neuronal cell.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

A composition comprising the peptide of claim 1 and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The composition of claim 5, which is formulated for oral or nasal administration.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

A method for promoting cell survival or plasticity, comprising contacting a cell with the peptide of claim 1 in an amount that is effective to increase the expression of an EB protein.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the EB protein is an EB1 protein, or an EB2 protein, or an EB3 protein.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the cell is a neuronal cell.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)
