## Abstract

Polymers including α-hydroxymethylacrylate units and methods of preparing polymers from α-hydroxymethylacrylates are provided. Advantageously, α-hydroxymethylacrylates may be used in an emulsion polymerization and function as a polymerizable surfactant. The ability of the α-hydroxymethylacrylates to be used as a polymerizable surfactant allows for emulsion polymerization systems to be prepared without other surfactants.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of preparing a polymer comprising:
an emulsion polymerization that employs at least one α-hydroxymethylacrylate as a reactive surfactant and does not employ an additional surfactant other than the at least one α-hydroxymethylacrylate,
where the at least one α-hydroxymethylacrylate is defined by the formula:
where R2 is a hydrocarbon group with at least 3 carbon atoms.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the α-hydroxymethylacrylate is defined by the formula
where R2 is a hydrocarbon group selected from the group consisting of n-propyl, n-butyl, t-butyl, n-pentyl, n-hexyl, 2-ethylhexyl, n-heptyl, n-octyl, n-nonyl, n-decyl, n-undecyl, n-dodecyl, n-tridecyl, n-tetradecyl, n-pentadecyl, n-hexadecyl, n-heptadecyl, n-octadecyl, and benzyl.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)
