Abstract
Compositions of and methods for using synthetic retinal derivatives as retinoid replacements and opsin agonists are provided.
Claims29
A method of treating autosomal dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa, comprising:
- administering a therapeutically effective amount of a synthetic retinyl ester to a human subject, wherein the autosomal dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa is due to expression of a mutant opsin protein,
- wherein the synthetic retinyl ester is a 9-cis-retinyl ester having a structure as represented by Formula I or an 11-cis-retinyl ester having a structure as represented by Formula II, wherein A in each formula is CH2OR and —R, along with the adjacent oxygen, forms a retinyl ester, and the ester substituent comprises a carboxylate radical of a C1 to C10 monocarboxylic acid or a C2 to C22 polycarboxylic acid:
A method of treating autosomal dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa, comprising:
- administering a therapeutically effective amount of a synthetic retinyl ester to a human subject, wherein the autosomal dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa is due to expression of a mutant opsin protein, wherein when the synthetic retinyl ester is administered to the human subject a functional opsin/retinal complex is formed in the eye;
- and,
