## Abstract

This document provides methods and materials for reducing ischemia-reperfusion injury. For example, methods and materials for administering ABA to reduce tissue injury caused by reperfusion following ischemia are provided.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for performing surgery within a mammal, wherein said method comprises:
(a) applying an occlusion to a blood vessel within said mammal to create ischemic tissue within said mammal,
(b) administering a composition comprising abscisic acid to said mammal, and
(c) removing said occlusion to restore blood flow to said ischemic tissue.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said mammal is a human.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said surgery is an embolectomy, a thrombectomy, a bypass surgery, an angioplasty, a carotid surgery, a coronary artery surgery, or an aortic surgery.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said occlusion is applied using a surgical clamp.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said blood vessel is an artery.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said ischemic tissue is brain tissue, myocardial tissue, or skeletal muscle tissue.
