## Abstract

The present invention includes novel chemical formulations having antimicrobial activity and their methods of use thereof. In some embodiments, the formulation further comprises at least one fungus.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A formulation having antimicrobial activity and comprising an antimicrobial component consisting of (i) at least one acid selected from the group consisting of propanoic acid and isobutyric acid; and (ii) an effective amount of isoamyl hexanoates; and wherein said antimicrobial component is the only antimicrobial agent in the formulation.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The formulation of claim 1 further comprising at least one amino acid and at least one salt.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The formulation of claim 1, wherein the at least one acid is propanoic acid and isobutyric acid combined at a ratio of about 1:1 by volume.

### Claim 4

A formulation having antimicrobial activity and comprising (1) an antimicrobial component consisting of (i) at least one acid selected from the group consisting of propanoic acid and isobutyric acid; and (ii) an effective amount of isoamyl hexanoates; and (2) at least one component selected from the group consisting of an amino acid, glucose, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and magnesium acetate; and wherein said antimicrobial component is the only antimicrobial agent in the formulation.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The chemical formulation of claim 4, wherein the at least one acid is propanoic acid and isobutyric acid.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The formulation of claim 5, wherein the at least one component is an amino acid and a salt selected from the group consisting of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and a mixture thereof.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

The formulation of claim 5, wherein the propanoic acid and isobutyric acid are combined at a ratio of about 1:1 by volume.

### Claim 8

An antimicrobial component for use directly or as a part of an antimicrobial formulation having antimicrobial activity and consisting of (i) at least one acid selected from the group consisting of propanoic acid and isobutyric acid; (ii) an effective amount of isoamyl hexanoates; and (iii) a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The antimicrobial component of claim 8, wherein the at least one acid is a combination of propanoic acid and isobutyric acid.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The antimicrobial component of claim 8, wherein the at least one acid is propanoic acid.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

The antimicrobial component of claim 9, wherein the propanoic acid and isobutyric acid are combined at a ratio of about 1:1 by volume.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

A method of treating a human or animal having a disease or disorder associated with a microbial infection, comprising administering to the human or animal an effective amount of the antimicrobial component of claim 8.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the microbial infection is caused by Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, or Salmonella.

### Claim 14

An antimicrobial component for use directly or as part of an antimicrobial formulation having antimicrobial activity and consisting of a combination of (i) at least one acid selected from the group consisting of propanoic acid and isobutyric acid; and (ii) an effective amount of isoamyl hexanoates.
